Village structure in Minecraft

Villages are the largest inhabited structures of the Overworld, built in plains, meadows, deserts, savannas, snowy plains and taigas. They give you food, beds and crops on day one, villagers to trade emeralds with, and an iron golem that guards the place. About one village in fifty generates as a zombie village instead.

How to find a village
Villages are among the most common structures. The game tries to place one in every 34 × 34 chunk region of the Overworld, at least 8 chunks from the next, and only builds it if the biome fits. Each of the five styles has its own biomes: the plains style in Plains and Meadows, the desert style in Deserts, the savanna style in Savannas, the snowy style in Snowy Plains and the taiga style in Taigas. Cross a big forest or a mountain range and you can walk a long way without seeing one.
From a distance, look for roofs, fields of crops and dirt paths cutting across the grass or sand. The /locate command above points to the village center, a fountain, a well or a small square, often next to the bell.
Villagers, jobs and the iron golem
Streets lead from the center to houses, farms and workshops. Houses provide the beds, and workshops hold the workstations that give villagers their jobs: a composter makes a farmer, a lectern a librarian, a cartography table a cartographer, and so on. A villager without a job claims any free workstation nearby and starts trading. Nitwits, in their green coats, never take a job.
Every normal village is built with an iron golem at its center. It attacks hostile mobs on sight, and it also turns on any player who hits a villager, so keep your weapon away from the residents. Villagers can summon more golems on their own, for example when zombies scare them. Cats spawn in villages too, and creepers and phantoms keep their distance from them.
Which chests to check first
Loot depends on the building. The weaponsmith's chest is the best one: iron ingots and iron gear, obsidian, a saddle, horse armor and sometimes diamonds. The toolsmith can also give diamonds, the temple holds emeralds, lapis lazuli and redstone, and the cartographer keeps maps and a compass. Ordinary houses mostly give bread, potatoes, seeds and saplings, which is enough to get through your first nights.
Zombie villages
/execute in minecraft:overworld run tp @s 31180.5 95.9 -15695.5 0 -5About 2% of villages generate abandoned, in any of the five styles. There is no golem and no healthy villager: zombie villagers roam the streets instead. Doors and torches are gone, cobwebs fill parts of the walls and the windows are dirty, so the place is pitch dark at night. Come by day, when the zombies burn in the sun or hide in the shade.
You can bring such a village back to life. Throw a Splash Potion of Weakness at a zombie villager, then feed it a Golden Apple. It shakes for a few minutes and turns back into a villager, who then sells to you at lower prices. Cure a few, give them beds and workstations, and the village fills up again.
Raids and Bad Omen
/execute in minecraft:overworld run tp @s -919.5 69 -1075.5 35 25Villages are also where raids happen. Pillager captains, recognisable by the Ominous Banner on their head, drop an Ominous Bottle when killed outside a raid. Drink it and you get Bad Omen. Walk into a village with that effect and it turns into Raid Omen; 30 seconds later, the raid starts at the spot where you received it. Drinking milk during those 30 seconds cancels everything.
Raiders arrive in waves. The first wave is made of pillagers; vindicators, ravagers, witches and evokers join the later ones. Ring the bell: villagers run indoors and nearby raiders start to glow, which makes the last stragglers easy to find. Win and you get Hero of the Village, which lowers every villager's prices for a while. If all the villagers die, the raid is lost. Captains travel with pillager patrols, and the nearest Pillager Outpost is never within 10 chunks of a village.
What to do with a village
- Trade. Villagers buy crops, wool, paper and other basics for emeralds, and sell tools, armor, enchanted books and food. Their offers get better as they level up.
- Light it up. Villages have few torches, and zombies go after villagers at night. A ring of light and a few fences protect your trading partners.
- Grow the population. Villagers breed when there are free beds and they have enough food, such as bread, carrots or potatoes.
- Lock in good jobs. A villager who loses its workstation before you trade with it can pick another job. Once you have traded, its profession is fixed.

Village — FAQ
How rare are zombie villages?
About 2% of villages generate as zombie villages, in any of the five styles. They have no iron golem and no regular villagers, only zombie villagers.
How do you cure a zombie villager?
Hit it with a Splash Potion of Weakness, then use a Golden Apple on it. After a few minutes it becomes a villager again and gives you lower prices.
Why is the iron golem attacking me?
Iron golems turn on any player who hurts a villager or attacks the golem itself. Keep your weapon away from the villagers.
How do you start a raid on purpose?
Kill a pillager captain to get an Ominous Bottle, drink it, then walk into a village. Bad Omen becomes Raid Omen and the raid starts 30 seconds later.
Can you stop a raid?
Drink milk while you have Raid Omen and no raid starts. Once it has begun, it ends when you defeat every wave or when all the villagers are dead.
