Oak Sapling block in Minecraft
This sapling grows into the common oak of forests and plains. Saplings are how you replant trees: put one on grass or dirt and, with light and space, it grows into a full tree.
It cannot be crafted; it can be found in chests. It can be composted: each one has a 30% chance to add a layer to a Composter. As fuel it burns for 5 seconds in a Furnace, enough to smelt 0.5 items.
What it does
A sapling needs a block of dirt, grass, podzol, moss or mud below it, enough light and free space above. It grows on its own over time, and Bone Meal speeds it up or grows it at once. Leaves drop saplings as they decay, so a tree farm replants itself.
Some trees need four saplings in a two-by-two square: dark oak and pale oak always do, and spruce and jungle saplings planted that way grow into giant trees. Saplings also burn as a small fuel and go into a composter.
