Minecraft potions 19 · Java Edition 26.3

Potions are brewed in a Brewing Stand, from a water bottle, Nether Wart and one key ingredient per effect. Modifiers then make them last longer, hit harder, or turn them into splash and lingering potions and Tipped Arrows. This page lists every brewable potion in Java Edition and explains how the whole system fits together.

What you need to start brewing

  • A Brewing Stand. Craft it from one Blaze Rod above three Cobblestone (Blackstone or Cobbled Deepslate work too). Village temples, igloo basements and End ships already have one.
  • Blaze Powder as fuel. One powder runs 20 brewing operations. A Blaze Rod gives two.
  • Water bottles. Fill a Glass Bottle at any water source or from a Cauldron.
  • Nether Wart. It grows in Nether Fortresses. Replant it on Soul Sand at home and you will never run out.

Since Blaze Rods and Nether Wart both come from the Nether, brewing usually starts after your first fortress trip.

How a brew works

Put up to three bottles in the bottom slots and an ingredient in the top slot. Each step takes 20 seconds and uses a single ingredient for all three bottles, so always brew in threes. The usual chain is: water bottle, then Nether Wart (Awkward Potion), then the key ingredient, then any modifier. The Potion of Weakness is the exception: it goes straight onto water.

Careful with plain water: most ingredients added to it give a Mundane or Thick Potion, which leads nowhere.

Modifiers

  • Redstone Dust: a longer duration.
  • Glowstone Dust: level II, but shorter. A potion takes Redstone or Glowstone, never both.
  • Fermented Spider Eye: corrupts the effect. Night Vision becomes Invisibility, Swiftness or Leaping become Slowness, Healing or Poison become Harming. Safest order: corrupt first, then add Redstone or Glowstone.

Splash, lingering and arrows

  • Gunpowder makes a splash potion you throw. You can add it at any point of the chain. The closer to the impact, the stronger the effect.
  • Dragon's Breath turns a splash potion into a lingering one that leaves a cloud. Collect it with an empty bottle in the purple breath of the Ender Dragon.
  • Tipped Arrows: eight arrows around one lingering potion in a crafting table give eight arrows carrying its effect.

To end any effect early, drink a Milk Bucket: it clears them all, good and bad.

Which potions to brew first

For a first trip back to the Nether, a Potion of Fire Resistance is the one that saves lives. Add a few Potions of Healing for emergencies and a Potion of Strength for tough fights. For ocean monuments, pair Water Breathing with Night Vision. And keep splash Weakness and a Golden Apple ready to cure a Zombie Villager. The Potion of Luck is the only one you cannot brew at all.

Potions — FAQ

How do you make a Brewing Stand?

Place one Blaze Rod in the top middle slot of a crafting table and three Cobblestone, Blackstone or Cobbled Deepslate in the row below.

Why did I get a Mundane Potion?

You added an ingredient straight to a water bottle. Most ingredients need an Awkward Potion first, made by adding Nether Wart to water.

Can you use Redstone and Glowstone on the same potion?

No. A potion is either extended with Redstone or strengthened with Glowstone. Adding the other one does nothing.

How many potions does one Blaze Powder brew?

One Blaze Powder fuels 20 brewing operations, and each operation can handle three bottles at once.

How do you make a Potion of Night Vision?

Add Golden Carrot to Awkward Potion in a brewing stand.
