The Mace takes two items: a Heavy Core and a Breeze Rod. Both come from trial chambers, and the Heavy Core only from ominous vaults, so the real work is running ominous trials. Here is the route for Java Edition 26.3, with odds read from the game files.
Find a trial chamber
Trial chambers are copper and tuff structures that start between Y -40 and Y -20 in the Overworld. With cheats on, /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers gives the nearest one. Bring good armor, food and blocks: their page covers spawners, keys and every vault reward.
Kill Breezes for their rods
Breezes never spawn naturally: they come out of the Trial Spawners in the breeze rooms. Each one killed by a player drops 1 or 2 Breeze Rods, and Looting adds 1 or 2 more per level. Keep at least three:
- 1 for the Mace itself,
- a few to repair it on an Anvil, since the Breeze Rod is its repair material,
- the rest for Wind Charges: 1 rod crafts 4, and they launch you up for smash attacks.
Get an Ominous Bottle
An ominous trial starts with Bad Omen, and Bad Omen comes from an Ominous Bottle. The surest source is a Pillager captain, the one carrying a banner in a patrol or at an outpost: it always drops one, at a level from I to V. Vaults can also give bottles.
Drinking the bottle gives Bad Omen for 100 minutes. Do not drink it near a village, where it starts a raid instead. A higher level is better here: it gives a longer trial.
Turn the trial chamber ominous
Walk into the trial chamber with Bad Omen. The first Trial Spawner that sees you turns it into Trial Omen, which lasts 15 minutes per Bad Omen level: 15 minutes at level I, 75 minutes at level V. While it lasts, the trial spawners near you become ominous: tougher mobs with enchanted gear, and items falling from above.
Clear an ominous spawner and it ejects one reward per player who fought: 30% of the time an Ominous Trial Key, otherwise consumables. Clear every ominous spawner you can before the effect runs out.
Open the ominous vaults
Ominous vaults are the dark Vault blocks that only accept an Ominous Trial Key. Each one opens once per player. The Heavy Core sits in the unique pool, which an ominous vault rolls 75% of the time, with 1 chance in 10 inside it:
| Unique reward | Chance per opening |
|---|---|
| Enchanted Golden Apple | 22.5% |
| Flow Armor Trim Smithing Template | 22.5% |
| Flow Banner Pattern | 15% |
| Music Disc (Creator) | 7.5% |
| Heavy Core | 7.5% |
At 7.5% per opening, the chance to have at least one Heavy Core is 54% after 10 openings, 79% after 20 and 90% after 30. Plan on several trial chambers, or several players opening the same vaults. These odds come from the Java loot tables; Bedrock Edition uses its own vault tables.
Craft the mace
In a Crafting Table, put the Heavy Core in the middle slot and the Breeze Rod right below it. The Mace hits for 6 damage at an attack speed of 0.6, has 500 durability and is repaired with Breeze Rods. Bedrock Edition uses the same recipe.
Hit from above for smash damage
Any hit after a fall of more than 1.5 blocks is a smash attack. It adds damage for every block fallen, knocks back mobs within 3.5 blocks and cancels your own fall damage when it lands. Extra damage in Java Edition 26.3, before armor, enchantments and critical hits:
| Fall | Extra damage | Total with the base 6 |
|---|---|---|
| 3 blocks | +12 | 18 |
| 5 blocks | +16 | 22 |
| 8 blocks | +22 | 28 |
| 10 blocks | +24 | 30 |
| 20 blocks | +34 | 40 |
The rule: +4 per block for the first 3 blocks, +2 per block up to 8, then +1 per block. A Wind Charge thrown at your feet gives you the height without a tower. Density adds 0.5 damage per block fallen per level, Breach cuts through armor and Wind Burst launches you back up after each smash attack; all three only go on the Mace. Pick the right set in the planner below, and see the best mace enchantments for the reasoning.

Too expensive: one step costs 40 levels or more, which survival refuses. Remove an enchantment or apply it later with an enchanting table.

Have at least 10 levels for the most expensive step. In XP points, the whole order costs about 435 if you level up just enough before each step.

FAQ
Can you find a mace in a chest?
No. No loot table in Java Edition 26.3 contains the Mace. You always craft it, and only its Heavy Core is a rare drop.
How many ominous vaults do you need for a heavy core?
Each opening has a 7.5% chance. That is about 13 openings on average, 9 for a 50% chance and 30 for a 90% chance.
Can you get a heavy core without an ominous trial?
No. Normal vaults never give it. You need an Ominous Trial Key, which only drops from ominous trial spawners.
Does the mace cancel fall damage?
Yes. When a smash attack hits a mob, your fall damage is reset, so you can drop from any height as long as the hit lands.
