How to make and use maps in Minecraft
Put 8 Paper around a Compass in a crafting table.

The Crafting Table gives you a 3 by 3 crafting grid, instead of the 2 by 2 grid of your inventory. Almost every tool, weapon and machine needs it, so it is usually the first block you make.
It is made with the Crafting Table from 4 × Oak Planks (or another variant). It is mined with an axe. As fuel it burns for 15 seconds in a Furnace, enough to smelt 1.5 items.
Craft it from four planks of any wood, place it, and use it to open the grid. Shaped recipes depend on where you put each ingredient, shapeless ones only on what you put in. The recipe book on the left lists what you can make with the items you carry and fills the grid for you.
Carry one with you on long trips: it costs little wood and lets you craft anywhere. Breaking it with any tool or by hand gives it back.
It is also the main ingredient of the Crafter, which crafts automatically with redstone. Being made of wood, it can be burned as fuel.
