How to find a Swamp Hut

The game places at most one Swamp Hut in each 32 × 32 chunk region, never closer than 8 chunks to the next, and only in the Swamp. The Mangrove Swamp never has one, so do not waste time searching among the roots. Look for a small dark-wood cabin standing on four oak log legs above the water, with a little porch at the front. Swamps are flat and fairly open, so a hut is easy to spot from a distance during the day.

A Swamp Hut Map saves you the search. Apprentice Cartographers sell it for emeralds and a compass, but only villagers of the taiga, snowy and jungle types offer it.

What's inside a Swamp Hut

The hut is a single room of spruce planks. It holds a crafting table, an empty cauldron and a flower pot with a red mushroom. There is no chest and no loot table: the value of the hut lies in its residents and in its spawning rules.

The Witch and the black Cat

When the hut generates, the game places a Witch and a Cat inside (no Witch on Peaceful). Neither of them despawns, but both wander, so the Witch may be standing outside on the porch or in the water nearby.

The Witch is the real threat. It throws splash potions of Poison, Slowness, Weakness and Harming, and drinks its own potions to heal or to resist fire. Close the distance fast and hit hard, or shoot it from cover. A Milk Bucket clears the poison if a fight drags on. Witches drop redstone dust, glowstone dust, sugar, gunpowder, spider eyes, glass bottles and sticks.

The Cat is a stray with a black coat, and any Cat that appears at the hut is black too. Tame it with raw cod or raw salmon if you want a black cat at home: like every cat, it keeps Creepers and Phantoms away.

How witch spawning works at the hut

The hut defines its own spawning zone: a box of 7 × 7 × 9 blocks that covers the hut from just under its floor to a little above its roof. Inside that box, any hostile mob the game spawns is a Witch, and any passive mob is a Cat. The usual monster rules still apply. The spot must be dark (no light from torches or other blocks), and monsters only spawn more than 24 blocks away from the nearest player.

In practice, that means the original hut can keep producing Witches at night for as long as you leave it standing. Do not light up the hut if you plan to farm it later.

Turning the hut into a witch farm

• Mark the box before you build. The zone does not move: it stays where the hut generated, even if you remove the hut.
• Keep the spawning floors dark. Replace the hut with dark platforms inside the box, so Witches have more places to appear.
• Make them fall. Push the Witches off the platforms with water into a collection point below, where you finish them off and the drops gather in one place.
• Wait at a distance. Stand more than 24 blocks from the spawning floors, but not too far, or the area stops spawning.
• Light up the surroundings. Torches across the nearby swamp stop other mobs from using up the spawn cap.
