Mineshaft structure in Minecraft

Mineshafts are abandoned networks of wooden tunnels under the Overworld, full of rails, cobwebs and minecarts with chests. They are common, easy to stumble upon while caving, and a quick early source of rails, name tags and loot. In the badlands they are built of dark oak and often break out onto the surface.

Where to find a mineshaft
Mineshafts are among the most common structures underground. Each chunk has a 0.4% chance of starting one, roughly one chunk in 250, under every Overworld biome except the Deep Dark. The regular version is pushed down below sea level, so its corridors can sit at any depth between the bottom of the world and about Y 53.
You rarely need /locate. Explore caves and ravines and watch for oak planks bridging a gap, fence posts under a plank beam, or a rail vanishing into the rock. Ravines often slice straight through a mineshaft, several mineshafts can merge into one huge network, and a stronghold sometimes cuts through one too.
The badlands mineshaft
/execute in minecraft:overworld run tp @s -3799.5 75 -3282.5 0 0In the three badlands biomes, the game builds a variant in dark oak instead of oak. It is also placed differently: rather than being buried under sea level, its centre is set at a random height between sea level (Y 63) and the surface. Its corridors therefore often stick out of the terracotta slopes, and you can spot the dark wooden beams from outside, sometimes in broad daylight.
What's inside a mineshaft
A mineshaft grows from a central room, a rounded cave with corridors leaving it at different heights. From there, straight tunnels, crossings (some on two levels) and staircases branch out up to about 80 blocks from the room. Fence posts and plank beams hold up the ceiling every few blocks. Where a corridor crosses a cave, planks fill in the missing floor, and logs prop it up from below or iron chains hang it from the ceiling.
About one corridor in three has rails along its floor. Here and there, a Minecart with Chest stands on a short piece of rail: that is where the loot is.
Cave spiders and cobwebs
/execute in minecraft:overworld run tp @s -4070.5 37 -3545.5 -90 12Some corridors without rails are choked with cobwebs and hide a spawner of cave spiders. These small spiders fit through one-block gaps, and their bite inflicts Poison. Cobwebs slow you to a crawl, so clear them before fighting: a sword cuts them quickly and drops string, while shears give you the cobweb itself.
Poison cannot kill you on its own, but it can leave you at half a heart with spiders still around. Keep a Milk Bucket to cure it at once. Then break the spawner with a pickaxe, or keep it and build a farm around it for string, spider eyes and experience.
How to loot a mineshaft efficiently
- Follow the rails. Chest minecarts wait along the corridors. Open one like a chest, or break the cart and everything spills out.
- Know what is worth it. You often find a Name Tag, sometimes golden apples or an enchanted book, and rarely an Enchanted Golden Apple. Add iron, gold, diamonds, glow berries, seeds and the Bounce music disc.
- Take the rails. Mine them with a pickaxe. The chests also give powered rails, detector rails and activator rails, enough to start your own minecart line.
- Check the walls. Corridors run through raw stone and expose plenty of ores along the way.
- Light up and mark your way. Levels stack on top of each other and loop around. Torches stop mobs from spawning and show where you have already been.

Mineshaft — FAQ
Why is there a mineshaft on the surface?
It is the badlands variant. In the badlands, mineshafts are placed between sea level and the surface, so their dark oak corridors often stick out of the hills.
Are mineshafts rare?
No. Each chunk has a 0.4% chance of starting one, which makes them one of the most common structures underground.
Where are the chests in a Mineshaft?
In Minecarts with Chest standing on the rails of the corridors, not in placed chests. Open one where it stands, or break it to drop the chest and everything inside.
Do mineshafts generate in the Deep Dark?
No. The Deep Dark is the one Overworld biome without them; you find Ancient Cities there instead.
How do you find a Mineshaft?
Use /locate structure #minecraft:mineshaft with cheats on, or look in every Overworld biome except Deep Dark.
