BIOMES OVERWORLD

River biome in Minecraft

The River is a long, narrow channel of water that winds between other biomes and links them together. Its bed of sand, gravel and clay is easy to mine, salmon and squid swim in it, and by boat it is one of the fastest ways to travel. At night, watch out for Drowned rising from the water.

What you find in a River

A River is mostly water. Its bed is covered with patches of Sand, Gravel and Clay, and Seagrass sways on the bottom. The banks keep the look of the land around them, with grass, a few flowers, bushes and sugar cane, and now and then an oak right by the water. In cold regions, the game uses the Frozen River instead, whose surface turns to ice.

Fish, squid and Drowned

Salmon live only in rivers and cold oceans, and Squid drop ink sacs. Fish are fewer here than in the ocean, though.

The real thing to watch is the Drowned. Rivers are among the few biomes where they spawn more often than usual. They appear in dark water, so at night or in deep spots, and they do not burn in daylight while they stay underwater. Kill them for rotten flesh and, sometimes, a Copper Ingot. One that holds a Trident can drop it.

How to use a River

  • Travel by boat. Rivers cross whole regions. In an Oak Boat you move much faster than on foot and you stay out of reach of most land mobs.
  • Dig clay. Clay blocks give clay balls for bricks, and the block itself smelts into terracotta.
  • Fish. A Fishing Rod works in any water, and a river is never far.
  • Farm by the water. Crops next to a river have all the water they need, and sugar cane grows straight on the banks.

Rivers are among the biomes where Drowned spawn more often. They need dark water, so they show up at night or in deep spots, and they do not burn while they stay underwater.

Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime, Drowned, Zombie, Enderman, Zombie Villager, Witch, Bat, Squid, Glow Squid and Salmon.

Which structures generate in the River?

How do you find the River?

With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:river gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, a seed map of your world shows where it is.
