Commands every command in Minecraft

Commands let you change almost anything in a Java Edition world: give items, change the time, build in seconds or run a server. This page lists every command of the game, grouped by use. Each command has its own page with the full syntax, the arguments and examples you can copy.

Turning commands on

In singleplayer, switch on Allow Commands when you create the world. In an existing world, open the pause menu, choose Open to LAN, turn on Allow Cheats and start the LAN world: commands then work until you leave. Without these options, only level 0 commands work. On a server, what you can run depends on your permission level, granted with /op. Using commands does not block advancements in Java Edition.

Permission levels

Every command requires a level from 0 to 4. Counting aliases such as /tell and /w, 10 commands are open to all players, like /msg, /list or /trigger. Level 2 holds 63 commands, the cheats you know: /give, /gamemode, /teleport, /fill or /execute. Command blocks run at this level. Level 3 has 13 commands to manage players, such as /kick and /ban. Level 4 has 8 commands that control the server itself, like /stop and the save commands. No command uses level 1 on its own.

Selectors and coordinates

Instead of a name, you can target players and entities with selectors: @p the nearest player, @r a random player, @a all players, @e all entities, @s yourself and @n the nearest entity. Filters narrow them down, for example @e[type=zombie,distance=..10], and you combine several with commas, as in @a[gamemode=survival,distance=..50]. For positions, ~ means relative to you: ~ ~1 ~ is one block above your feet. ^ follows where you look: ^ ^ ^5 is five blocks in front of you.

Typing faster and longer

Press Tab while typing to complete a command, an ID or a selector, and press it again to cycle through suggestions. The up arrow brings back the commands you typed before. The chat accepts 256 characters at most. Longer commands, like a /summon with lots of data, go in a Command Block, which you get with /give since it is not in the usual Creative tabs.

Commands: FAQ

What is the difference between ~ and ^ in coordinates?

~ is relative to the position along the world axes, ignoring where you look. ^ is relative to your facing: left, up and forward.

Why does my command say "Unknown or incomplete command"?

There is a typo, a missing argument, or you lack the permission level for that command. The error line ends with <--[HERE] at the exact spot where the game stopped reading.

Which commands work without cheats?

These commands are open to every player, even with cheats off: /help, /list, /me, /msg, /random, /teammsg, /trigger. In single player, /seed and /version also work with cheats off.

How do I turn on cheats?

When you create a world, turn on Allow Commands. In a single-player world you already play, choose Open to LAN and turn on Allow Cheats. On a server, an operator has to give you the right level with /op.
