A world 1000 blocks wide
/worldborder set 1000The border becomes a 1000 by 1000 square, 500 blocks on each side of the center.

The /worldborder command controls the world border: its width, its center, how fast it grows or shrinks, the damage it deals and the warning players get. Use it to limit a survival world, build a shrinking arena or keep a map inside a fixed area.

Command generatorThe border is a square. set takes the full width, so /worldborder set 1000 means 500 blocks on each side of the center. The largest width is 59,999,968 blocks, the default size of a new world, and the smallest is 1. A border that moves over time is the classic shrinking arena. Add s to the duration, because a plain number is read as ticks.
Changing the size does not move the center. Set the center first with center, then the width.
Outside the border, players start taking damage after a buffer zone of 5 blocks, 0.2 per block and per second by default. damage buffer and damage amount change these two values. warning distance and warning time control when the screen turns red.
For a battle royale, combine it with /spreadplayers to scatter players inside the border and /title to announce each shrink.

No. The value is the full width from one edge to the other. A border of 1000 reaches 500 blocks from the center in each direction.
Set it back to the maximum with /worldborder set 59999968. That is the default size of a new world.
Type it in the chat with cheats on: /worldborder add <distance> [<time>].
