Which templates to hunt first

Some templates are easy. Every library chest of a Stronghold holds an Eye template, and half of the Woodland Mansion chests hold a Vex template. A Jungle Pyramid chest gives Wild one time in three, and the template comes as a pair.

Others take patience. Silence is the rarest pattern in the game: about one Ancient City chest in 80 has it, and Ward is four times more common in the same chests. Bring a stack of Diamonds before you go deep: once you have one copy of a template, you can duplicate it.

Trial Chambers: Bolt and Flow

The two patterns of the Trial Chambers come from vaults. A normal vault, opened with a Trial Key, gives Bolt in 6.25% of rewards. An ominous vault, opened with an Ominous Trial Key, gives Flow in 22.5% of rewards. Each vault rewards each player only once, so explore several chambers.

Trail Ruins: four patterns under the gravel

Host, Raiser, Shaper and Wayfinder are not in chests. You get them by brushing Suspicious Gravel in Trail Ruins with a Brush. Only the rare finds can contain a template, so dig the whole ruin carefully: breaking the gravel destroys its loot.

Tide and the Nether patterns

Tide is the only template dropped by a mob: each Elder Guardian of an Ocean Monument has a 20% chance to drop one. In the Nether, Rib comes from Nether Fortress chests and Snout from every chest type of a Bastion Remnant. Spire waits in the End City.

Smithing with Style

This challenge asks you to apply eight specific templates: Spire, Snout, Rib, Ward, Silence, Vex, Tide and Wayfinder. Each one has to go on a piece of armor at a Smithing Table at least once, and the reward is 150 experience points. Silence and Ward set the pace, so copy them as soon as you find them.
