How to find a Bastion Remnant

Bastions share their placement with the Nether Fortress. The Nether is divided into regions of 27 × 27 chunks, each region holds one of the two structures, and a bastion is picked three times out of five. They appear in the Nether Wastes, the Crimson and Warped Forests and the Soul Sand Valley, but never in Basalt Deltas.

The game builds a bastion from Y 33 upward, so its lower floors are often buried in netherrack while its walls and ramparts rise into the open. Look for massive dark walls of Polished Blackstone Bricks and Blackstone with glints of gold. The building is a ruin: expect broken walls, missing stairs and long drops, often into lava. The /locate command or the seed map above gives you its exact position.

The four types of bastion

Every bastion is built from one of four layouts, all equally likely:

• Housing units: a compact block of stacked rooms and ramparts, with chests spread over several levels.
• Hoglin stables: large walled pens full of Hoglins, linked by stairs where Magma Blocks burn your feet. Their chests can give Ancient Debris, Blocks of Gold, enchanted diamond tools and stacks of golden carrots.
• Treasure room: a huge square hall around a raised core of Blocks of Gold that holds one or two treasure chests, above a lava pool hiding a Magma Cube spawner. It is the best guarded type, with most of the Piglin Brutes.
• Bridge: a long bridge over lava leading to a fortified entrance. The chest at that entrance always contains a Lodestone.

Piglins, Brutes and Hoglins

Piglins leave you alone as long as you wear at least one piece of golden armor. Without it, they attack with golden swords and crossbows. Even with gold on, they turn hostile if they see you open a chest, barrel or shulker box, or break a Block of Gold, Gilded Blackstone or gold ore. Soul fire scares them: they keep away from Soul Torches, Soul Lanterns and soul campfires.

Piglin Brutes are the real threat. They ignore golden armor, attack on sight with golden axes and hit very hard. They are placed when the bastion generates and never respawn, so the bastion gets much safer once they are gone. Hoglins charge and toss you into the air. They avoid warped fungi, Respawn Anchors and Nether portals, and drop porkchops, a welcome food source in the Nether.

What's worth looting

The treasure chest is the jackpot. It always contains the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, which you need at a smithing table to turn diamond gear into netherite. On top of it, the chest draws three items from a list that includes Netherite Ingots, Ancient Debris, Netherite Scrap, enchanted diamond armor and weapons, diamonds and, rarely, an Enchanted Golden Apple.

The ordinary chests found in all four types each have a 1 in 10 chance of the same template and a 1 in 12 chance of the Snout Armor Trim Smithing Template. They can also hold the Pigstep music disc, the Piglin banner pattern, spectral arrows and golden apples. Seven diamonds and a block of Netherrack turn one netherite template into two, so never use your last one.

How to raid a bastion safely

• Wear one golden piece. Golden boots or a golden helmet are enough for regular Piglins. Keep the rest of your armor in diamond or better.
• Clear before you loot. Deal with every Piglin in view before you open a chest or mine gold, or wall yourself in first.
• Take Brutes one at a time. Lure them into a narrow corridor or shoot them from a ledge they cannot reach.
• Bring blocks and Fire Resistance. The ruins are full of holes, and the bridge and treasure types sit above lava.
• Keep Soul Lanterns and warped fungi. Placed in a corridor, they keep Piglins and Hoglins at bay while you work.
• Use the gold. Each Block of Gold gives nine ingots, and Piglins trade ingots for Ender Pearls, Fire Resistance potions, obsidian and more.
