Piglin mob in Minecraft

Piglins are the gold-loving inhabitants of the Nether. They attack on sight unless you wear at least one piece of golden armor, and they trade: give a piglin a gold ingot and it hands back a random item. That bartering is one of the best sources of ender pearls, Fire Resistance potions and obsidian in the game.

How to stay safe around Piglins

Wear one piece of golden armor, any of them: helmet, chestplate, leggings or golden boots. Boots are the usual choice because they cost little gold and leave your best armor where it matters. Piglins then ignore you, but they still turn hostile if you:

  • attack a piglin, as nearby piglins join the fight;
  • open a chest, a barrel, an ender chest or a shulker box while they are near;
  • mine gold ore, gilded blackstone or a block of gold close to them.

Piglins are also afraid of soul fire. They back away from a soul torch, a soul lantern or a soul campfire, which makes these blocks useful to guard a path through a Bastion Remnant.

How bartering works

A Piglin admires the Gold Ingot it just picked up, before tossing something back Scene setup: Natural bastion; Piglin held in place, the ingot dropped by command and picked up by the Piglin. In-game screenshot · Java Edition 26.3, seed 2026 Same spot in a world with seed 2026:

Throw a gold ingot to an adult piglin, or use it on the piglin. It holds the ingot up, admires it for a few seconds, then throws you one random item. Each ingot is one draw from the bartering table. Only gold ingots work: piglins also pick up gold items they like, such as a golden apple or golden tools, but they keep those and give nothing back. Baby piglins never barter.

What is worth bartering for

  • Ender pearls, 2 to 4 at a time, very useful before the End.
  • Potions of Fire Resistance, as drinkable or splash potions.
  • Obsidian and crying obsidian, for portals and respawn anchors, without a diamond pickaxe.
  • Soul Speed books and iron boots. Apart from bastion chests, bartering is the only way to get this enchantment.
  • String, nether quartz and the Dried Ghast, the block that grows into a rideable Happy Ghast.

The rare items are the useful ones, so bring a full stack of ingots or more. Most draws are gravel, blackstone, soul sand, nether bricks, leather or spectral arrows.

Piglins outside the Nether

Take a piglin to the Overworld or the End and it starts shaking. After about 15 seconds it turns into a Zombified Piglin, which no longer barters. Keep your bartering setup in the Nether.

Piglins have other habits worth knowing. They love pork: they pick up and eat raw porkchops and cooked porkchops. They hunt hoglins in groups, and they flee from zombified piglins and zoglins. They fight with golden swords, crossbows or, more rarely, golden spears.

Piglin — FAQ

Why are Piglins attacking me even with gold armor?

You probably opened a chest or barrel, mined a gold block or gold ore, or hit a piglin near them. Golden armor only stops them attacking on sight.

What can you barter with Piglins?

Only gold ingots. Other gold items are picked up and kept without giving anything in exchange.

Do baby Piglins barter?

No. Baby piglins take gold items and keep them, but only adults hand back an item.

Where does the Piglin spawn?

In Nether Wastes and Crimson Forest.

What does a Piglin drop?

Nothing from its loot table, but it drops the items it picked up and the weapon or armor it spawned with (8.5% chance per piece).
