Spitting and wolves

Llamas are neutral. Hit one and it spits back at you, and others in the herd may join in. The spit hurts only a little, but it is enough to knock you around on a mountain ledge. Llamas also spit at wolves, and wolves stay away from them, which can make a few llamas useful next to a sheep pen.

Wild llamas live in groups in the savanna plateau and the windswept biomes such as windswept hills.

Taming a llama

Climb on a wild llama with an empty hand. It bucks you off at first; keep trying until hearts appear. Feeding it wheat or a hay bale first makes it accept you sooner. A tamed llama still cannot be ridden like a horse: it takes no saddle, and it walks wherever it wants even with you on its back.

Chests and carpets

Use a chest on a tamed adult llama to give it an inventory. Unlike a donkey, a llama's chest size depends on its strength: from three slots for the weakest to fifteen for the strongest. You see it in the llama's inventory once the chest is on.

The other slot takes a carpet. It is purely decorative, but a different carpet color on each llama makes it easy to tell which one carries what.

Put a lead on one llama and walk away: other llamas nearby fall into line behind it, each one following the one in front. With a single lead you can move a whole loaded caravan across the map. This is how the wandering trader travels with his trader llamas.

Breeding stronger llamas

Two tamed llamas breed when you feed them hay bales. Wheat only heals them and helps a young llama grow. A baby's strength comes from its parents with some randomness, so breeding your strongest llamas together gives you bigger chests over time. When killed, a llama drops leather.
