Nautilus mob in Minecraft

The Nautilus is a shelled sea creature that you can tame, saddle and ride underwater. Tame it with pufferfish, and while you ride it your air bar stops dropping thanks to Breath of the Nautilus. It is the best mount for exploring the ocean floor.

Where to find a Nautilus

Nautiluses live in every kind of ocean, from frozen to warm. They are more common in regular, lukewarm and warm oceans, deep or not, and rarer in cold and frozen ones. A wild Nautilus is neutral: it leaves you alone as long as you leave it alone.

How to tame and ride a Nautilus

  • Tame it with a Pufferfish or a Bucket of Pufferfish. These are the only two items that work.
  • Saddle it: put a saddle on the tamed Nautilus, then mount it. A saddle is crafted from leather and an iron ingot.
  • Dive: while you ride, you get Breath of the Nautilus, so your air bar does not go down underwater. You can stay at the bottom as long as you stay in the saddle.
  • Jet forward: a Nautilus can dash in a sudden burst of speed, then needs a moment to recover before the next one.

Nautilus armor

A Nautilus can wear its own armor, in copper, iron, gold, diamond or netherite. You cannot craft the first four: look for them in the chests of shipwrecks, buried treasure and ocean ruins. The Netherite Nautilus Armor comes from upgrading the diamond one on a smithing table, with a Netherite Upgrade template and a netherite ingot.

Feeding and breeding

A Nautilus eats fish: raw or cooked cod and salmon, pufferfish and tropical fish, or any bucket of fish. Feed two adults to get a baby. Breeding is the easiest way to get more mounts once you have found a pair.

Nautilus Shells

A Nautilus killed by a player sometimes drops a Nautilus Shell. Rather than hunting them, you can fish shells up as treasure or buy them from the Wandering Trader. Eight shells around a Heart of the Sea craft a Conduit, which, set inside a prismarine frame, gives Conduit Power to players nearby underwater.

Do not confuse it with the Zombie Nautilus, its undead version.
