Ocean biome in Minecraft
The Ocean is the temperate sea of the Overworld: blue water over a gravel floor, kelp forests, cod and the odd pod of dolphins. It has neither the corals of warm seas nor the ice of frozen ones, but its shipwrecks and stone brick ruins are where most hunts for buried treasure begin.

Structures in the Ocean
What you find under the surface
The floor of an Ocean is mostly Gravel, with patches of sand. Kelp grows in long stalks towards the surface and short seagrass fills the gaps. Kelp is the most useful plant here: smelt it into Dried Kelp for a quick snack, then craft nine pieces into a Dried Kelp Block, a compact fuel for your furnaces. Seagrass only drops if you cut it with shears.
Cod is the only fish that spawns here, so salmon or tropical fish mean you have crossed into another ocean. Squid and nautiluses swim in open water, and the rare islet can carry an oak tree or some sugar cane.
Dolphins and drowned
Dolphins are one of the reasons to sail a temperate Ocean: they never spawn in cold or frozen seas. Swim next to them to get Dolphin's Grace, which makes you swim much faster. Feed one raw cod and it heads for the nearest shipwreck or ocean ruin. Follow it.
In dark water and at night, Drowned rise from the depths. Some carry a Trident, and killing those is the main way to get one in survival; the only other source is a rare reward from Trial Chambers vaults. They can also drop a copper ingot.
From a shipwreck to buried treasure
Shipwrecks rest upright or on their side on the floor. The map chest of a wreck always holds a Buried Treasure Map, and the chests of the stone brick Ocean Ruins can hold one too. The red X marks a chest buried under a nearby beach. It always contains a Heart of the Sea, the core of a conduit.
Shipwrecks and ruins are everywhere in this biome, but an ocean monument never is. For that, head for a Deep Ocean.

Ocean — FAQ
What is the difference between an Ocean and a Deep Ocean?
A Deep Ocean is the same temperate sea with a much lower floor and mostly tall seagrass. Only the deep version can hold an ocean monument.
How do I get a dolphin to lead me to treasure?
Feed it raw cod. It then swims towards the nearest shipwreck or ocean ruin, so stay close behind it, ideally while you have Dolphin's Grace.
Which mobs spawn in the Ocean?
Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime, Zombie, Enderman, Zombie Villager, Witch, Drowned, Bat, Nautilus, Squid, Dolphin, Glow Squid and Cod.
Which structures generate in the Ocean?
Mineshaft, Ocean Ruins, Ruined Portal, Shipwreck, Stronghold and Trial Chambers.
How do you find the Ocean?
With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:ocean gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, a seed map of your world shows where it is.
