Forest biome in Minecraft
The Forest is the most common wooded biome of the Overworld: oaks and birches on rolling ground, with flowers, bushes and leaf litter under the trees. It is the classic place to start a survival world, because wood, food and wolves are all a short walk away.

Structures in the Forest
What grows in a Forest
Most trees are oaks, some of them large and branching, with birches mixed in. That gives you two kinds of wood from day one: Oak Log and Birch Log. Under the trees the ground is often covered with Leaf Litter, and now and then a tree lies on its side as a fallen trunk, sometimes with a mushroom growing on top.
Between the trunks you find short grass, a few Bush clumps and some flowers. Besides poppies and dandelions, the Forest grows tall flowers: Lilac, Rose Bush and Peony, plus the Lily of the Valley. A Firefly Bush may grow near water, and pumpkins and sugar cane turn up here and there.
Your first days in a Forest
- Wood first. Chop a few logs, craft planks and sticks, then a wooden pickaxe. Oak leaves sometimes drop apples, handy food before you have a farm.
- Wolves. A Wolf that spawns here has a coat variant found only in the Forest. Tame one with bones and it fights at your side.
- Keep the saplings. Oak and birch saplings let you grow a tree farm right next to your base.
- Bushes need shears. Broken by hand, a Bush drops nothing. Use Shears or Silk Touch to collect it.
Nights under the trees
The Forest has the usual hostile mobs of the Overworld, and at night the trees work against you: a Creeper behind a trunk is hard to spot. The shade also protects Zombies and Skeletons from the morning sun, so a few may still wander around after dawn. Light the edge of your camp with torches and cut the trees closest to your door. A Forest often borders Plains or another kind of forest, a good spot for a base between open land for farms and wood for building.

Forest — FAQ

Yes, but rarely. Only a few oak and birch trees generate with a Bee Nest. For more bees, head to a Flower Forest, where nests are ten times more likely on each tree.
What is the difference between a Forest and a Birch Forest?
A Forest mixes oaks and birches and has leaf litter under the trees. A Birch Forest grows only birches and has wildflowers on the ground instead.
Which mobs spawn in the Forest?
Sheep, Pig, Chicken, Cow, Wolf, Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime, Zombie, Enderman, Zombie Villager, Witch, Bat and Glow Squid. Bee: Lives in Bee Nests generated on some trees (2 to 3 bees per nest).
Which structures generate in the Forest?
Abandoned Camp, Mineshaft, Ruined Portal, Stronghold and Trial Chambers.
How do you find the Forest?
With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:forest gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, a seed map of your world shows where it is.
