Zombified PiglinNeutral · 10 hearts Passive, neutral, hostile and bosses
- Passive mobs never attack: Cows, Sheep, Chickens, Villagers. They give food, wool, leather and trades.
- Neutral mobs leave you alone until you provoke them. An Enderman attacks if you look it in the eyes; bees, wolves and Zombified Piglins call their friends when you hit one of them.
- Hostile mobs attack on sight: Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers, Witches and many more.
- Bosses: the Ender Dragon and the Wither. The Warden has more health than either of them but counts as a hostile mob; it is best avoided rather than fought.
When and where mobs spawn
Every biome has its own spawn list, and each mob page shows it. In the Overworld, hostile mobs only spawn on blocks with no light from torches, lamps or other light sources, so lighting up your base and the caves around it is the best defence. They come out at night and in caves; zombies and skeletons burn in sunlight unless they wear a helmet or find shade or water.
The Nether plays by other rules: most of its mobs ignore light, so torches help far less there. Some mobs only spawn in or around structures: Blazes and Wither Skeletons in Nether Fortresses, Guardians at Ocean Monuments, Shulkers in End Cities, Witches at Swamp Huts. On Peaceful, hostile mobs do not spawn at all.
Breeding and taming
Feed two adults of the same species their food and a baby appears: Wheat for cows and sheep, seeds for chickens, carrots, potatoes or beetroots for pigs. Each mob page lists what it eats. Some mobs can be tamed: Wolves with bones, Cats with raw cod or salmon, parrots with seeds, horses by riding them until they accept you, and the Nautilus with a Pufferfish. Golems are built instead: an Iron Golem from four Blocks of Iron and a Carved Pumpkin.
Fighting mobs well
- Use the right enchantment: Smite against undead, Bane of Arthropods against spiders and silverfish, Sharpness for everything.
- Hit a Creeper and step back before it explodes; block arrows with a shield.
- Looting raises the drops of most mobs, which matters for farms.
Most mob farms use the spawning rules above: a dark spawning platform, water to move the mobs and a drop that weakens them.
