Vindicator mob in Minecraft
The Vindicator is the axe-wielding illager of woodland mansions and raids. It has no ranged attack, but it runs straight at you and hits harder than most mobs, so take it down before it reaches you.

Command
/summon minecraft:vindicator ~ ~ ~Where you meet Vindicators
Vindicators live in Woodland Mansions, where they are placed with the building and wait in its rooms and corridors. The mansion has no spawn list of its own, so once you have cleared them, they do not come back. The other place to meet them is a raid: they join the waves that follow the first one, alongside Pillagers, Evokers and Ravagers.
A Vindicator stands with its arms crossed until it spots a target. Then it raises its iron axe and charges. It goes after players, villagers, wandering traders and iron golems.
How to fight a Vindicator
- Hit it before it hits you. It moves fast, so a sprinting hit followed by a step back works better than standing still and trading blows.
- Do not trust your shield alone. A shield blocks its swings, but an axe can knock the shield out of use for a few seconds.
- Shoot first. In the long corridors of a mansion, a bow or crossbow lets you deal damage while it runs at you.
- Wear good armor before you explore a mansion. Several Vindicators in a small room can bring you down in a few seconds.
Drops: emeralds and the axe
A Vindicator killed by a player can drop an emerald, with more chances thanks to Looting. It sometimes drops its axe as well. On their own, Vindicators are not worth farming. Their emeralds mostly come in bulk from raids, together with the totems of the Evokers.
The Johnny trick
Name a Vindicator "Johnny" with a name tag and it attacks almost every mob around it, not just players and villagers. It is a fun way to set up arena fights, but it still attacks you too, so keep your distance.

Vindicator — FAQ
Do Vindicators respawn in Woodland Mansions?
No. They are placed when the mansion is generated and the structure has no spawn list of its own. Once cleared, only ordinary monsters can spawn in its dark rooms.
What does naming a Vindicator Johnny do?
A Vindicator named Johnny with a name tag attacks almost every mob nearby, not only players, villagers and golems.
Can a Vindicator disable my shield?
Yes. Its axe can put your shield on cooldown for a few seconds, so keep some distance instead of only blocking.
Where does the Vindicator spawn?
In Woodland Mansions, where they are placed when the mansion generates, and in raids on villages, where they join several of the waves. They never spawn on their own in a biome.
What does a Vindicator drop?
Emerald. Only when killed by a player. It also drops the weapon or armor it spawned with (8.5% chance per piece).
