How to find a Woodland Mansion

The game allows at most one mansion per 80 × 80 chunk region, never closer than 20 chunks to the next, and only builds it in a Dark Forest or a Pale Garden. You can explore for hours without stumbling on one. The /locate command or the seed map are the quick options. In survival, look for an explorer map: cartographer villagers can sell one, and the buried copper chest of an Abandoned Camp can hold a Woodland Mansion Map.

Once you are close, it's hard to miss: a massive block of dark oak, birch planks and cobblestone rising above the canopy, with two full floors and a smaller third floor under the roof. The front door on the ground floor opens onto carpeted corridors that leads into the rest of the house.

Who lives in a mansion

Vindicators stand in rooms on every floor. They rush you with iron axes and hit hard, so fight them with a shield up. Evokers only appear on the second and third floors. They raise rows of Evoker Fangs from the ground and summon vexes, small flying mobs that pass through walls. Kill the evoker first: its vexes disappear after a while anyway.

Each evoker always drops a Totem of Undying. Hold it in either hand and it saves you once from a death. On the ground floor, one room type keeps a group of allays locked in cells behind iron bars; free them and they can collect items for you.

All these mobs are placed when the mansion generates and never respawn. Once a room is cleared, it stays clear, but the number of totems you can get from one mansion is limited to the evokers it contains. Dark corridors can still spawn ordinary hostile mobs, and in a Pale Garden, creakings wander the woods outside at night.

Secret rooms and traps

Some rooms have no door at all. You spot them as a long stretch of wall where no door opens, between rooms you have already visited, and you get in by breaking through. Their content varies:

• a room with a chest on its own;
• a Block of Diamond encased in obsidian;
• a Block of Diamond in a glass case with lava sitting right on top of it, so mine it from the side and keep a block ready to stop the flow;
• a room full of cobwebs with a spider Monster Spawner;
• a room where a Trapped Chest holding two Ender Pearls stands between two blocks of TNT. Opening it powers the TNT, so break both TNT blocks before you touch the chest.

Loot worth taking

Chests are spread across the rooms rather than grouped in one place, so you will find them as you clear. Their best rewards are an Enchanted Golden Apple, golden apples, a diamond chestplate, enchanted books, music discs and leads. Half of the chests also hold a Vex Armor Trim smithing template, and many contain resin clumps. A few chests are fixed decorations rather than loot: one holds an iron axe with Efficiency, another dark oak saplings, another eight alliums.

How to clear a mansion

• Prepare for a long fight. Bring a shield, a strong sword or axe, food, healing potions and plenty of blocks and torches.
• Go floor by floor. Clear the ground floor completely before taking the stairs. Mansions are mazes, and fighting on two floors at once is how you get surrounded.
• Mark cleared rooms. Place a torch at each doorway you have checked. The corridors look alike and the light also stops new mobs from spawning.
• Rush the evokers. Close the distance quickly and keep moving sideways to dodge the fangs. Fighting in a doorway limits how many vexes reach you.
• Turn it into a base. Once cleared and lit, the mansion is a huge ready-made house, far from everything and full of rooms to fill.
