- Potions. Most effects come from brewing: Swiftness, Fire Resistance, Night Vision, Water Breathing and more. Splash and lingering potions hit everyone in the area, and tipped arrows carry the effect at range.
- Food. Golden Apples give Absorption and Regeneration. Rotten Flesh, Raw Chicken and Pufferfish can give Hunger. Suspicious Stew gives one effect, set by the flower it was cooked with.
- Blocks. A Beacon keeps an effect such as Haste on every player in range. A Conduit gives Conduit Power underwater.
- Mobs. Many hostile mobs apply an effect when they hit: Wither from Wither Skeletons, Levitation from Shulkers, Mining Fatigue from Elder Guardians, Darkness from the Warden. Dolphins give Dolphin's Grace instead.
- Events. Bad Omen, from an Ominous Bottle, turns into a raid or an ominous trial. Winning a raid gives Hero of the Village.
Beneficial, harmful and neutral
Beneficial effects help you, harmful ones hurt or hinder you, and neutral ones depend on the situation: the omens and Glowing are useful or dangerous depending on what you do next. Every effect has a level (I, II and so on) and a duration. The icons at the top right of the screen show what is active and how long is left, and the inventory lists everything in detail.
How to remove an effect
A Milk Bucket clears every effect at once, the good along with the bad. That is the catch: drink milk to stop Wither and you also lose your Absorption hearts or Hero of the Village. A Honey Bottle only cures Poison and leaves the rest alone. Dying clears everything, and a Totem of Undying clears all effects before giving its own.
Effects that work well together
- The Nether: Fire Resistance, so lava and fire cannot kill you, plus Night Vision.
- Ocean Monuments: Water Breathing and Night Vision, then milk for the Mining Fatigue.
- Boss fights: Strength, Regeneration and a Golden Apple eaten right before the fight.
Undead mobs play by other rules
Zombies, skeletons, the Wither and other undead mobs react the other way round: Instant Health hurts them and Instant Damage heals them. They also ignore Poison and Regeneration. A Splash Potion of Healing is a weapon against them, and a Potion of Harming is useless.
