Darkness effect in Minecraft

Darkness makes your view pulse in and out of black, so you only see a few blocks around you between pulses. It comes from the Warden and from Sculk Shriekers, so you meet it in the Deep Dark.

Where Darkness comes from

Sculk Shriekers cover the floor of the Deep Dark and its Ancient Cities. They shriek when you step on one, or when a nearby Sculk Sensor picks up a vibration you made. Each shriek gives Darkness to players nearby and brings the Warden one step closer to emerging. Once it is out, the Warden spreads Darkness around itself while it hunts.

How to deal with it

Sneak. Sneaking does not set off Sculk Sensors, and the Swift Sneak enchantment on your leggings lets you sneak almost at walking speed.
Use wool. Walking on wool or carpet makes no vibration, and a wool block next to a sensor muffles it.
Milk only buys time. A Milk Bucket clears Darkness, but the next shriek or pulse brings it back. Leaving the area is the real fix.

Read it as a warning

Darkness is a warning more than a threat. It means shriekers have heard you or the Warden is close. When it keeps coming back, stop, go quiet and back away from where it started.

Don't mix it up with Blindness, which stays constant and blocks sprinting. The prize for staying quiet is worth it: Echo Shards, enchanted books and the city's other loot.
