/effect command in Minecraft

/effect gives status effects such as Speed or Night Vision to players and mobs, or removes them. You choose the duration, the level and whether particles show. It is the standard way to buff players, build challenges or calm down a mob for a test.

Duration and level

The duration is in seconds, up to 1,000,000, or infinite. Without a duration, the effect lasts 30 seconds. The amplifier starts at 0: 0 is level I, 1 is level II, and so on up to 255. Set hideParticles to true for a clean screen, for example with Night Vision while building.

Instant effects and undead mobs

Instant Health and Instant Damage, the effects of the Potion of Healing and the Potion of Harming, apply once, so their duration does not matter. On undead mobs such as the Zombie they work the other way round: Instant Health hurts them. The effect list on this page gives every ID; Glowing, for instance, outlines a mob through walls.

Removing effects

/effect clear without an effect removes all of them, like a Milk Bucket in Survival. Two messages are common: "Target has no effects to remove" when there is nothing to remove, and "Unable to apply this effect (target is either immune to effects, or has something stronger)". For lasting stat changes without an effect icon, use /attribute.

/effect: FAQ

How do I make an effect last forever?

Use infinite instead of a number of seconds, for example /effect give @s minecraft:night_vision infinite. It stays until cleared or until death.

Why is my Speed effect level II instead of level I?

The amplifier starts at 0. Use 0 for level I, 1 for level II, 2 for level III.

How do I use /effect?

Type it in the chat with cheats on: /effect clear [<targets> [<effect>]].

Who can use /effect?

Cheats on, or operator level 2.
