How to make banner designs in Minecraft: loom and patterns
the only way back is the Cauldron (last step).

The Cauldron is a cauldron, an iron basin that holds water, lava or powder snow. This is the empty one, the only cauldron that exists as an item.
It is made with the Crafting Table from 7 × Iron Ingot. It is mined with a pickaxe.
Seven iron ingots make an empty cauldron. Pour a bucket of water, lava or powder snow into it and it fills up; take it back out with an empty bucket. A water or powder snow cauldron holds three levels, and a glass bottle takes water out one level at a time.
Cauldrons also fill on their own: rain and snowfall slowly add water and powder snow, and pointed dripstone hanging above a cauldron drips water or lava into it from the block above. A water cauldron puts out burning mobs, washes the dye off leather armor and the top layer off a banner, and removes the color of a shulker box.
A cauldron is the job site of the leatherworker, and a Redstone Comparator reads its fill level. Breaking any filled cauldron gives back only the empty cauldron.

// Slots with several items cycle through every accepted option.
the only way back is the Cauldron (last step).
A leatherworker works at any cauldron, empty or filled.
Right-click a water source or a filled Cauldron with them, then put up to 3 Water Bottles in the bottom slots.
At the Crafting Table: 7 × Iron Ingot give 1 × Cauldron. Mining the block drops it.
It stores water, lava or powder snow, collects rain and drips, and washes dyed items.
The fastest tool is the pickaxe.
