Blaze mob in Minecraft

The Blaze is the floating fire mob of Nether Fortresses, and the only source of blaze rods. You need those rods for a brewing stand and for Eyes of Ender, so sooner or later every player has to fight Blazes. With a little preparation, they are far less dangerous than they look.

Where to find Blazes

Blazes never spawn in the open Nether. They only appear inside a Nether Fortress: some spawn anywhere in the fortress, and others come from the blaze spawners that sit on raised platforms in its halls. A spawner is the best place to collect rods, because it keeps producing Blazes as long as you stay close to it.

How a Blaze attacks

A Blaze drifts up and down slowly, often hovering out of reach. When it spots you, it catches fire, starts to smoke, then fires a burst of three small fireballs. Each fireball that hits sets you on fire, and the ones that miss can light the ground around you. Several Blazes at once quickly turn a corridor into a sea of flames.

How to beat Blazes

  • Drink a Potion of Fire Resistance. Fireballs and burning stop hurting you, which removes almost all of the danger.
  • Break their line of sight. A Blaze needs to see you to shoot. Wait behind a corner or a wall, let it come closer, then hit it with your sword.
  • Throw snowballs. Snowballs hurt Blazes, and so do splash water bottles. A stack of snowballs finishes them from a distance.
  • Raise a shield to block a burst while you close the gap.

What blaze rods are for

A blaze rod only drops when a player kills the Blaze, and Looting raises the number you get. One rod crafts a brewing stand. One rod also crafts two blaze powder, which fuels the brewing stand, brews the Potion of Strength and goes into magma cream and fire charges.

Above all, blaze powder is half of every Eye of Ender. You need Eyes of Ender to locate the stronghold and fill the twelve frames of the End portal, and some of them break when you throw them. Collect more rods than you think you need before you leave the fortress.

Blaze — FAQ

Why didn't the Blaze drop a blaze rod?

Blaze rods only drop when a player kills the Blaze, and even then a kill can give nothing. A Blaze killed by another mob or by the environment never drops a rod.

Where does the Blaze spawn?

Only in Nether Fortresses, either from the structure itself or from its blaze spawners. In survival they never spawn anywhere else.

Does Fire Resistance protect you from Blazes?

Yes. Their fireballs deal fire damage, so with Fire Resistance a Blaze can barely hurt you.

What does a Blaze drop?

Blaze Rod. Only when killed by a player.

How much health does a Blaze have?

20 health points, which is 10 hearts.
