STRUCTURES THE NETHER

Nether Fortress structure in Minecraft

Nether Fortress in Minecraft: Bridges over a lava lake
Render by Blockaria, rebuilt from the official Minecraft: Java Edition game files (Mojang): structure templates and generation rules. Example layout: every generated structure is different.
Bridges over a lava lake

A Nether Fortress is a maze of nether brick bridges and corridors that can generate in any Nether biome. It is the only place where Blazes and Wither Skeletons spawn naturally, so you come here for Blaze Rods, Nether Wart and Wither Skeleton Skulls: the keys to potions, the End and the Wither.

How to find a Nether Fortress

Fortresses share their placement with Bastion Remnants. The game divides the Nether into regions of 27 × 27 chunks and puts one of the two structures in each region, never closer than 4 chunks to the next one. A bastion is chosen three times out of five, a fortress twice. Bastions cannot generate in Basalt Deltas, so when the chosen spot falls there, the game builds a fortress instead.

The game then shifts the whole fortress so that its lowest piece starts at Y 48 or slightly above. Long bridges of Nether Bricks cross lava lakes and caverns at mid-height, on pillars that reach all the way down to the ground. The fastest way to find one is the /locate command or the seed map above. Without them, travel through open areas and look for dark, perfectly straight lines in the distance. Once you reach a bridge, follow it: every bridge leads to the rest of the fortress.

What's inside a fortress

A fortress has two halves. The open half is a network of bridges, crossings and small stair rooms. On these bridges stand the blaze platforms: a raised stand behind nether brick fences, with a monster spawner for Blazes on top. Almost every fortress has two of them.

The closed half, the castle, is a maze of narrow corridors, staircases and balconies. Its chests are tucked into some of the corridor turns, so a fortress can hold anything from none to about a dozen: check every corner. The castle also has the Nether Wart rooms, large halls with a central staircase and a bed of Soul Sand planted with Nether Wart on each side. Most fortresses have two, some have none. Watch your step in the castle entrance hall: a lava source sits in the middle of its floor.

Inside a fortress, the game replaces the usual spawns of the biome with its own list. Blazes and Wither Skeletons are the most common, followed by Zombified Piglins, Magma Cubes and a few regular Skeletons. They can spawn anywhere inside the fortress pieces, bridges included, not only around the spawners.

Blazes float, ignore fire and lava, and throw bursts of fireballs from a distance. Wither Skeletons carry stone swords and their hits inflict Wither, which drains your health for a few seconds. They are taller than you, so a gap two blocks high is too low for them to follow you through.

What to farm in a fortress

  • Blaze Rods. Blazes only drop Blaze Rods when a player kills them. A rod builds the Brewing Stand, and crafts into Blaze Powder, its fuel. Blaze Powder and an Ender Pearl make the Eye of Ender that leads you to the Stronghold and the End.
  • Nether Wart. Harvest it and replant it on Soul Sand at home. It is the base of almost every potion and grows in any dimension.
  • Wither Skeleton Skulls. Each Wither Skeleton killed by a player has a 2.5% chance to drop its skull, up to 5.5% with Looting III. Three skulls on a T of Soul Sand or Soul Soil summon the Wither, the boss that drops the Nether Star.
  • Chests. Gold, iron, a few diamonds, saddles, horse armor and Nether Wart, plus a 1 in 15 chance per chest of the Rib Armor Trim Smithing Template.

Tips to explore a fortress safely

  • Drink a Potion of Fire Resistance. It makes blaze fireballs harmless and saves you if you fall into lava.
  • Fight Blazes from cover. Stand behind a wall or a pillar and let them come closer instead of trading fire on an open bridge.
  • Leave Zombified Piglins alone. They are neutral, but hitting one turns the whole group against you.
  • Mark your way back. The castle corridors all look alike. Place blocks or torches on the same side on your way in.
  • Think long term. A blaze spawner never runs out. Build a Nether portal near the fortress and turn one platform into a blaze farm: every brewing session needs Blaze Powder.

Nether Fortress — FAQ

Can a bastion and a fortress generate in the same spot?

No. Both use the same placement grid, and each 27 × 27 chunk region of the Nether gets one or the other, never both. If you just found a bastion, look for the fortress in the neighbouring regions.

Do blaze spawners ever stop working?

No. A monster spawner keeps producing Blazes as long as a player stays close to it, which is why fortress platforms are the usual spot for a blaze farm.

How do I get Wither Skeleton Skulls faster?

Kill Wither Skeletons yourself with a Looting III sword: the drop chance goes from 2.5% to 5.5%. Skulls never drop if the mob dies from lava, a fall or another mob, with one exception: the explosion of a charged Creeper always gives one.

Can Nether Wart grow outside the Nether?

Yes. Plant it on Soul Sand in any dimension. It grows on its own without water or light, but bone meal has no effect on it.

How do you find Nether Fortress?

Use /locate structure minecraft:fortress with cheats on, or look in Basalt Deltas, Crimson Forest, Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley and Warped Forest.
