Nether Wastes biome in Minecraft
The Nether Wastes are the classic Nether: red netherrack hills, lava seas, glowstone on the ceiling and fires on the ground. For many players this is the first biome on the other side of the portal, and the place to learn the rules of the Nether before heading for fortresses and bastions.

Structures in the Nether Wastes
What you find in the Nether Wastes
Almost everything is Netherrack, with patches of Soul Sand and gravel at low levels and scattered fires. Clusters of Glowstone hang from the ceiling. Nether Quartz Ore and Nether Gold Ore are common in the walls, and Magma Blocks appear around the level of the lava sea.
Mining Ancient Debris
Ancient Debris generates in every Nether biome. Its larger veins sit between Y 8 and Y 24, while single blocks can turn up almost anywhere. It resists explosions, so blasting tunnels with TNT is a quick way to expose it. Smelt it to get the scrap you need for netherite gear.
Rules that change in the Nether
- Beds explode when you try to sleep. Use a Respawn Anchor to set your spawn point.
- Water evaporates as soon as you pour it, and lava flows faster and farther than in the Overworld.
- One block travelled here equals eight in the Overworld, which makes the Nether a shortcut between distant bases.
- Piglins attack you unless you wear at least one piece of gold armor, such as a Golden Helmet.
- A Zombified Piglin stays calm until you hit it. Then the whole group around it turns on you.
- A Ghast shoots fireballs from far away. Hit a fireball back to send it flying at the ghast.
Bring a Potion of Fire Resistance, and never dig straight down: the lava sea is never far below.

Nether Wastes — FAQ
Is it safe to build a base in the Nether Wastes?
It can be, with the right materials. Ghast fireballs break weak blocks such as netherrack, so build walls of cobblestone, stone bricks or other sturdier blocks.
Does a compass work in the Nether?
A normal compass spins at random in the Nether. A compass linked to a lodestone placed in the Nether points to it as usual.
Which mobs spawn in the Nether Wastes?
Strider, Zombified Piglin, Ghast, Piglin, Magma Cube and Enderman.
Which structures generate in the Nether Wastes?
Bastion Remnant, Nether Fortress and Ruined Portal.
How do you find the Nether Wastes?
With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:nether_wastes gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, a seed map of your world shows where it is.
