Strider mob in Minecraft
The Strider is the peaceful mob that walks on lava in the Nether. Put a saddle on it and steer it with a warped fungus on a stick, and it becomes the safest way to cross the Nether's lava oceans. Away from lava it shivers, turns purple and slows down.

Command
/summon minecraft:strider ~ ~ ~Why Striders live on lava
A Strider is at home on lava: it walks on the surface, never burns and moves at full speed there. On land, away from lava, it gets cold. It shivers, its skin turns purple and it walks slowly. Water is worse, as it actually hurts a Strider, so keep it dry if you ever bring one to the Overworld.
Striders spawn on lava in every Nether biome. Now and then one spawns with a baby Strider on its back, or with a Zombified Piglin riding it.
How to ride a Strider
You need two things:
- a saddle, crafted from three leather and an iron ingot, or found in chests;
- a warped fungus on a stick, crafted from a fishing rod and a warped fungus.
Put the saddle on the Strider, climb on, and hold the stick: the Strider walks where you look. Using the stick gives it a short burst of speed and wears the stick down a little each time. Without the stick in your hand, the Strider just wanders where it wants.
Safety tips for lava crossings
- Never get off over lava. Steer to the shore before you dismount.
- Drink a Potion of Fire Resistance before a long trip. If anything goes wrong, it buys you time to get out.
- Watch for Ghasts. A blast can knock you off. On a Strider, you cannot easily dodge.
- Keep a spare stick. A worn-out stick breaks back into a fishing rod, so a few warped fungi in your inventory let you craft a new one on the spot.
Breeding and string
Feed two Striders warped fungus to breed them. They also follow anyone holding warped fungus or the stick, which helps to lead one into a pen. When killed, a Strider drops 2 to 5 string, a handy source in the Nether for bows and wool.

Strider — FAQ
How do you control a Strider?
Saddle it, climb on and hold a warped fungus on a stick. The Strider walks where you look, and using the stick gives it a speed boost.
Why is my Strider purple and shivering?
It is cold because it is away from lava. Put it back on lava and it warms up and speeds up again.
Can Striders go in water?
Avoid it. Water hurts Striders, and riders are thrown off underwater.
Where does the Strider spawn?
In Basalt Deltas, Crimson Forest, Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley and Warped Forest.
What does a Strider drop?
String. It also drops anything a player put on it.
