Axolotl mob in Minecraft
The Axolotl is a small amphibian of the Lush Caves and one of the best allies you can carry underwater. It hunts fish, attacks Drowned and Guardians on sight, plays dead to heal, and rewards you with Regeneration when you finish off its target. You move it around in a bucket and breed it with buckets of tropical fish.

Axolotls live in the water of Lush Caves, and they spawn above clay blocks at the bottom of the pools. Look for flooded parts of a lush cave with clay underneath. They never spawn on the surface, so to bring one home, catch it with a water bucket: you get a Bucket of Axolotl that keeps its color, and you can release it wherever you want.
The five colors
Axolotls come in Leucistic (pink), Wild (brown), Gold, Cyan and Blue. The first four spawn naturally. Blue never does: it only appears, very rarely, when two axolotls breed. Breeding many pairs is the only way to get one.
How to breed Axolotls
Axolotls eat only one thing: a Bucket of Tropical Fish. Feed one to each of two adults and a baby appears; you get the water buckets back. The baby usually takes the color of a parent, with a small chance of turning Blue. Hold a Bucket of Tropical Fish and nearby axolotls follow you, which makes it easy to lead them into a pen.
How axolotls fight
- They hunt fish, squid, glow squid and tadpoles. Keep them away from your aquarium.
- They always attack Drowned, Guardians and Elder Guardians, which makes them excellent partners in an Ocean Monument.
- They play dead. When badly hurt, an axolotl rolls over and stays still. Enemies lose interest, and it regenerates before getting back into the fight.
Why bring axolotls to a monument
When you kill a mob that an axolotl was fighting, you get Regeneration, and your Mining Fatigue is removed. Against Elder Guardians, which keep cursing you with that effect, a couple of axolotls released from buckets make the whole raid easier.
One limit: an axolotl dries out on land after a while. It survives in the rain and heads back to water when it can, but do not leave one far from the sea.
