Where Cod swim

Cod gather in schools in regular, cold and lukewarm oceans, deep or not. You will not find them in warm or frozen waters. A school moves as one, and if you swim into it the fish scatter, then regroup.

Three ways to get Cod

By hand: one hit is enough. The fish drops Raw Cod, already cooked if it was on fire when it died, and sometimes a little bone meal.
With a bucket: use a water bucket on a Cod to get a Bucket of Cod, then empty it wherever you want. Fish released from a bucket do not despawn, which makes it the way to stock an aquarium.
With a fishing rod: Raw Cod is by far the most frequent fish you reel in, so you do not even need to find a school.

Out of the water, a Cod flops about and dies after a short while. Wild fish also despawn when you move away, so do not expect a school to wait for you.

What Raw Cod is for

Food: edible raw, but cooking it into Cooked Cod restores much more hunger.
Animals: Raw Cod tames cats, earns the trust of ocelots, makes a Dolphin lead you to treasure, and is one of the fish that feed a Nautilus.
Trading: Fisherman villagers buy Raw Cod for emeralds and cook it for you.

Axolotls hunt Cod, so keep the two apart in an aquarium.
