Deep Ocean biome in Minecraft
The Deep Ocean is the temperate sea at its deepest: the floor drops far below the surface and meadows of tall seagrass sway in the dark. It is one of only four biomes where ocean monuments generate, so this is where you go for prismarine, sponges and the gold guarded by guardians and elder guardians.

Structures in the Deep Ocean
How it differs from a regular Ocean
A Deep Ocean has the same cod, squid, dolphins and drowned as the shallow Ocean, the same gravel floor and the same kelp. What changes is the amount of water above your head, and the plants: most of the seagrass here is Tall Seagrass. Light fades quickly as you dive, so a Potion of Night Vision helps as much as one of water breathing.
Finding the ocean monument
An Ocean Monument can only generate in a deep ocean biome, and the area around it has to be ocean or river too. The game tries to place one in each 32 × 32 chunk region, at least 5 chunks from the next. From a boat you see a large dark shape on the floor; underwater it is a huge prismarine building lit by sea lanterns.
Raiding the monument
- Guardians: Guardians keep spawning inside the monument and fire a laser that charges up before it hits. Break their line of sight behind a wall.
- Elder Guardians: three Elder Guardians live in the monument. They regularly give you Mining Fatigue, which makes breaking blocks painfully slow. Kill them first. Each one drops a Wet Sponge.
- Gear: a Potion of Water Breathing and boots with Depth Strider make the fight much easier.
A monument has no chests. The loot is the building itself: Prismarine Shards and crystals from the guardians, the sponges of the sponge rooms, and gold blocks hidden in the core under dark prismarine. Smelt wet sponges into a dry Sponge and use it to drain the flooded rooms.

How do you get rid of Mining Fatigue in a monument?
Drinking milk clears it, but each Elder Guardian applies it again while it is alive. Kill all three and it stops coming back.
Are there chests in an ocean monument?
No. The rewards are the gold blocks hidden in its core, the wet sponges of the sponge rooms and what guardians and elder guardians drop.
