End portal room, cutaway view

Strongholds are underground mazes of stone bricks that hold the only End Portals in the Overworld. Every world has 128 of them, set on eight rings around the world origin, and Eyes of Ender lead you to the nearest one. Inside you will also find libraries full of enchanted books, hidden silverfish and chests of iron gear.

Key blocks

How strongholds are placed in a world

Strongholds do not follow the usual grid of structures. The game builds exactly 128 of them per world, on eight rings centred on X 0, Z 0. The first ring holds only three, between roughly 1,300 and 2,800 blocks from the origin. The next rings hold 6, 10, 15, 21, 28 and 36 strongholds, each ring about 3,000 blocks further out, and the eighth ring takes the last 9. Along a ring, strongholds are spread at roughly even angles, and each one is nudged toward a suitable biome nearby.

The whole complex stays well below sea level: its highest point never reaches Y 53. Caves and ravines often cut into it, and it can cross a mineshaft, so a caving trip sometimes ends in stone brick corridors by pure luck.

How to find a stronghold with Eyes of Ender

An Eye of Ender drops back down: the stronghold’s first stairs are right below Scene setup: Thrown for real in Survival, then time was frozen to catch it as it falls. In-game screenshot · Java Edition 26.3, seed 2026 Same spot in a world with seed 2026:

Craft an Eye of Ender from an Ender Pearl and Blaze Powder, then throw it. It flies a short way toward the nearest stronghold, hovers for a moment, then falls back as an item or shatters. Expect to lose about one eye in five: pick each one up and walk the way it flew.

To save eyes, triangulate. Throw one eye and note its direction on the F3 screen, walk a few hundred blocks to the side, then throw a second one. The stronghold lies where the two lines cross. Once you are within about 12 blocks of its starting point, the eye stops climbing and dives into the ground. Dig down right there, with a staircase rather than a straight shaft.

What's inside a stronghold

A stronghold is a tangle of corridors, stairs and rooms in stone bricks, with cracked and mossy variants. It starts with a spiral staircase and can branch out up to about 112 blocks in each direction. Doorways are open arches, wooden doors, iron bars or iron doors with a stone button on each side. The rooms to know:

  • Portal room: exactly one per stronghold, never right next to the entrance. Steps lead up to the portal, which stands over a basin of lava, and a silverfish spawner sits at the top of the steps.
  • Libraries: up to two, lined with bookshelves and cobwebs. The tall version has a gallery floor, a chandelier and two chests instead of one.
  • Prison cells: a short hall of cells behind iron bars and iron doors.
  • Crossing rooms: large halls with a torch pillar, a small fountain or a wooden mezzanine. Only the mezzanine hides a chest.
  • Storerooms: small corridors with a single chest on a stone ledge.

Silverfish and other dangers

The portal room from the entrance: steps, silverfish spawner and the frames above the lava Scene setup: Two Eyes of Ender added to the frames at the back; two Silverfish placed. Original lighting. In-game screenshot · Java Edition 26.3, seed 2026 Same spot in a world with seed 2026:

About one wall block in twenty is an Infested Stone Bricks block. It looks like any other brick, but breaking it releases a Silverfish, and a silverfish under attack wakes up others hidden in the walls nearby. Walk the corridors instead of tunnelling through walls, and fight on open floor.

In the portal room, break the spawner with a pickaxe before anything else: as long as you stay close, it keeps producing silverfish. Watch your step as well, since lava fills two small pools by the door on top of the basin under the portal. The rest of the stronghold is dark, so ordinary hostile mobs spawn in it as in any cave.

How to activate the End Portal

Each of the 12 End Portal Frames has only a 10% chance of already holding an eye, so bring 12 Eyes of Ender and a few spares. Fill every empty frame and the End Portal opens in the middle. Jump in and you land in the End, where the Ender Dragon is waiting.

Frames cannot be mined in Survival, so the portal stays where it is. Before you jump, place a bed near the portal room and use it to set your respawn point: if you die in the End, you come back a few steps from the way in.

What to loot first

Libraries are the best rooms. Their chests always contain the Eye Armor Trim smithing template, along with paper, books and enchanted books carrying strong enchantments. Storeroom chests are where Ender Pearls, diamonds, iron gear, horse armor and the otherside music disc turn up. Crossing chests hold mostly food, iron, redstone and coal. Mark explored corridors with torches as you go: they loop back on themselves and all look alike.

Stronghold — FAQ

How many strongholds are there in a world?

128 in Java Edition, on eight rings around X 0, Z 0. The innermost ring holds only three of them.

How many Eyes of Ender do you need to open the End Portal?

Up to 12, one per frame. Each frame has a 10% chance of already holding an eye, so count the empty ones and keep a few spares, since about one thrown eye in five shatters.

Why does my Eye of Ender fly into the ground?

You are within about 12 blocks of the stronghold's starting point. Dig down right there.

Can you move an End Portal?

No. End Portal Frames cannot be mined in Survival, so the portal stays in its stronghold.

How do you find a Stronghold?

Throw Eyes of Ender: each one flies toward the nearest stronghold. Follow them until an eye dives into the ground, then dig down there. With cheats on, /locate structure minecraft:stronghold gives the coordinates.
