Villager trading in Minecraft: professions, workstations, best trades
enchanted books, Bookshelves

The Enchanted Book stores one or more enchantments without applying them. Combined with a tool, weapon or piece of armor on an Anvil, it transfers them, which lets you choose exactly which enchantments an item gets.
You get enchanted books by enchanting a plain Book on an Enchanting Table, by trading with a Librarian, from fishing treasure and from loot chests. Librarians are the most reliable source: each one offers a fixed enchantment, and some enchantments, like Mending, are never offered by an enchanting table and only come from trades and loot.
On an anvil, put the item in the first slot and the book in the second. Two books with the same enchantment and level merge into the next level up, which is how you build high-level books. Each anvil use raises the cost of later ones, so plan the order of combinations.
A Grindstone removes the enchantments from a book and returns some experience. Enchanted books can be stored in a Chiseled Bookshelf, but they do not count as bookshelves for an enchanting table.
