Dripstone Caves biome in Minecraft

Dripstone Caves are underground halls bristling with stone spikes that hang from the ceiling and rise from the floor. They hold more copper than ordinary caves, because the veins are bigger, and they are the place to collect Pointed Dripstone, the block behind renewable lava farms and mud-to-clay converters.

What you find in Dripstone Caves

The walls are plain stone, but almost every surface bristles with Pointed Dripstone. Short spikes grow in groups, wide patches of Dripstone Block cover floor and ceiling, and in tall chambers stalactites and stalagmites merge into huge columns. Some spikes stand in water, so expect small pools between them.

The biome also uses its own veins of Copper Ore, twice the usual vein size, so a short trip can fill a chest with copper. Lava lakes and the usual ores, iron and coal included, are there too.

Putting dripstone to work

  • Water or lava on tap. Hang Pointed Dripstone under a block that has a water or lava source on top, then put a Cauldron under the tip. The drips slowly fill it, and the source is never used up.
  • Clay from mud. Place Mud on a block with Pointed Dripstone hanging below it. The mud dries out and turns into Clay.
  • More dripstone. Pointed Dripstone hanging from a Dripstone Block with water above it slowly grows longer.

Dangers in the dark

Landing on an upright spike hurts far more than a normal fall, so look before you jump. Breaking the block a stalactite hangs from makes it drop on whatever stands below. The caves are dark, so the usual hostile mobs spawn, and in the water you may meet a Drowned: this is the only biome outside oceans and rivers where they spawn naturally. The Glow Squid also lives in the underground pools.

Dripstone Caves — FAQ

Why is there so much copper in Dripstone Caves?

The biome generates its own copper veins, twice the size of the standard ones. The orange ore stands out well on the stone walls between the dripstone.

How do you get lava from Pointed Dripstone?

Put a lava source on top of a block, hang Pointed Dripstone under that block and place a cauldron below the tip. The cauldron fills with lava after a while and the lava source stays in place.

Which mobs spawn in the Dripstone Caves?

Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime, Zombie, Drowned, Enderman, Zombie Villager, Witch, Bat and Glow Squid.

Which structures generate in the Dripstone Caves?

Mineshaft, Ruined Portal, Stronghold and Trial Chambers.

How do you find the Dripstone Caves?

With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:dripstone_caves gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, a seed map of your world shows where it is.
