BIOMES OVERWORLD

Plains biome in Minecraft

Plains are wide, flat grasslands with only a handful of oak trees. They are one of the most common biomes of the Overworld and one of the best places to start a survival world: easy to cross, easy to build on, and home to villages, horses and plenty of farm animals.

Structures in the Plains

What you find in Plains

The ground is a sea of grass blocks covered with short grass and tall grass, with a few small bushes here and there. Trees are rare: most chunks have none at all, and the few you see are oaks, some of them large branching oaks. About one oak in twenty carries a bee nest with its Bees, your first source of honey and honeycomb.

Flowers grow in wide patches. Depending on the spot, you get dandelions, poppies, oxeye daisies, cornflowers and azure bluets, or whole fields of tulips in orange, red, pink and white. Along rivers and lakes, sugar cane and firefly bushes grow on the banks.

Why Plains are a good place to start

Flat ground means you see mobs coming from far away and you can build without moving tons of dirt. Sheep, pigs, chickens and cows spawn in large numbers, so food, leather and wool are never far. Horses and the odd Donkey roam the grass: tame one, put a saddle on it and you cross the map much faster.

Plains are also one of the biomes where villages generate, with farms, beds and villagers to trade with. Pillager outposts can appear too, so keep your distance from any dark wooden tower on the horizon.

Surviving the first night

The open terrain works both ways: nothing blocks your view, but nothing hides you either. Zombies, skeletons, spiders and creepers spawn in the dark grass. Before sunset, dig into a small hill or wall yourself in, and light up the area around your shelter. Three pieces of wool and three planks make a bed, which lets you skip the night. Plains often border forests for wood, and their variant, the Sunflower Plains, is easy to spot by its yellow fields.

Plains — FAQ

Are there trees in the Plains?

Very few. Most chunks have no tree at all, and the rare ones are oaks. Collect logs whenever you see one, or walk to a nearby forest for a proper supply of wood.

How do you get honey in the Plains?

Look for a bee nest hanging from an oak. Use a glass bottle on a full nest to get honey, or shears to get honeycomb, ideally with a campfire under the nest so the bees stay calm.

Which mobs spawn in the Plains?

Sheep, Pig, Chicken, Cow, Horse, Donkey, Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime, Zombie, Enderman, Zombie Villager, Zombie Horse, Witch, Bat and Glow Squid. Bee: Lives in Bee Nests generated on some trees (2 to 3 bees per nest).

Which structures generate in the Plains?

Mineshaft, Pillager Outpost, Ruined Portal, Stronghold, Trial Chambers and Village.

How do you find the Plains?

With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:plains gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, a seed map of your world shows where it is.
