Slime mob in Minecraft
The Slime is the bouncing green cube that splits into smaller copies each time you kill it. Only the smallest ones drop slimeballs, so a full Slime gives you a whole family to clear. It spawns in swamps at night and in hidden slime chunks deep underground.

Command
/summon minecraft:slime ~ ~ ~How a Slime splits
Slimes come in three sizes. Kill a large one and it bursts into several medium Slimes. Each medium one splits into several small ones. Small Slimes do no damage to you and are the only ones that drop slimeballs. The fight is short if you stay calm: the big ones hit and push you around, so back off while the pieces scatter, then pick off the little ones.
Where Slimes spawn
- Swamps at night. In Swamps and Mangrove Swamps, Slimes spawn on the surface in the dark. The phase of the moon matters: they are most common around the full moon and absent at new moon.
- Slime chunks. About one chunk in ten, chosen by the world seed, spawns Slimes deep underground, below Y=40, whatever the light level. If you keep running into Slimes in the same cave, you are probably in one.
- Elsewhere. They also appear in the Sulfur Caves and from trial spawners in Trial Chambers.
A slime chunk is the place for a slime farm: dig out a large dark room below Y=40 and let them spawn.
Frogs and slimeballs
Frogs eat small Slimes. A Slime eaten by a Frog always drops exactly one slimeball, instead of the usual zero to two. Frogs near a swamp slime spawn collect slimeballs for you.
What slimeballs are for
Nine slimeballs make a Slime Block, the bouncy redstone block that also brews the Potion of Oozing. A mob under Oozing releases Slimes when it dies. One slimeball on a piston makes a Sticky Piston, and one with Blaze Powder makes Magma Cream for fire resistance.
Its Nether cousin, the Magma Cube, splits the same way but drops magma cream instead.
