BIOMES OVERWORLD

Frozen Ocean biome in Minecraft

The Frozen Ocean is the coldest sea in the Overworld. Snow falls on it, much of its surface freezes into ice, icebergs of packed ice rise from the water and polar bears walk across the floes. Below the surface it is almost empty: no kelp, no seagrass, and salmon as the only fish.

Structures in the Frozen Ocean

Ice, icebergs and snow

The Frozen Ocean is cold enough for snow and for the water surface to freeze into Ice, so you cross wide sheets of it broken by open water. Icebergs stand out above it. Most are made of Packed Ice; a rare few are solid Blue Ice. Blue Ice also grows in small clusters under the waterline, stuck to the underside of icebergs.

All three ice blocks drop nothing unless you mine them with Silk Touch. Break normal ice above water without it and it turns back into water, which can open a hole right under your feet. Packed Ice is the better building block: unlike normal ice, it never melts, even next to torches.

Polar bears on the floes

This sea and the Deep Frozen Ocean are the only biomes where Polar Bears can spawn on ice, so you meet them far from land. Adults leave you alone, but they attack if you get close to a cub or if you hit them. When killed, they drop raw cod or Raw Salmon.

Getting across

There are no dolphins, kelp or seagrass here, and salmon are the only fish. Travel by boat: an Oak Boat slides fast on ice and still floats in open water, so you can cross floes and gaps without getting out. Frost Walker boots freeze a path across the water as you walk. The shores around are usually snowy, like a Snowy Beach or Snowy Plains.

Frozen Ocean — FAQ

Are polar bears hostile in the Frozen Ocean?

Not usually. An adult attacks when you get close to its cub or when you hit it, so give bears with cubs a wide berth.

How do you cross a Frozen Ocean quickly?

By boat. Boats slide fast on ice and float in the gaps, so you can stay seated across floes and open water. Frost Walker boots are the alternative on foot.

Which mobs spawn in the Frozen Ocean?

Polar Bear, Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime, Zombie, Enderman, Zombie Villager, Witch, Drowned, Bat, Nautilus, Squid, Glow Squid and Salmon. Frostbite: Coming in 26.4.

Which structures generate in the Frozen Ocean?

Mineshaft, Ocean Ruins, Ruined Portal, Shipwreck, Stronghold and Trial Chambers.

How do you find the Frozen Ocean?

With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:frozen_ocean gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, a seed map of your world shows where it is.
