Stony Shore biome in Minecraft

The Stony Shore is a rocky coast where bare stone meets the sea instead of sand. Gravel runs through the rock in thin bands, and no animal spawns there, so it feels empty. It is a quick source of stone and gravel and a natural spot for a harbor or a lighthouse.

What a Stony Shore looks like

Where a Beach would be a gentle slope of sand, a Stony Shore is a ledge of Stone that runs straight down to the water. Thin, winding strips of Gravel cut through the rock, the only change in an otherwise gray landscape. On the sea side lies the Ocean, on the other the land biome the coast belongs to.

There is no sand here, so no sugar cane farm on the shore and no turtle nests. The ground stays bare, which also makes it easy to read: anything that moves stands out.

No animals, normal monsters

The biome has no passive mob in its spawn list. Cows, sheep, pigs and turtles never appear on their own, so bring food. At night, the usual monsters spawn as anywhere else: zombies, skeletons, creepers and spiders. A Ruined Portal can stand among the rocks, worth a look for its chest and its obsidian.

What to do on a Stony Shore

  • Collect stone without digging down. Mining the surface gives you Cobblestone right away, enough for tools, a furnace and a first shelter.
  • Get flint. Mining gravel sometimes gives Flint instead of the block, the base of arrows and flint and steel.
  • Build a harbor. The rock gives you solid foundations right at the water's edge: perfect for docks, a boathouse or a lighthouse facing the sea.
  • Start your sea trips here. Grab an Oak Boat and set out to explore the ocean and its wrecks.

Which mobs spawn in the Stony Shore?

Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime, Zombie, Enderman, Zombie Villager, Witch, Bat and Glow Squid.

Which structures generate in the Stony Shore?

Mineshaft, Ruined Portal, Stronghold and Trial Chambers.

How do you find the Stony Shore?

With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:stony_shore gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, a seed map of your world shows where it is.
