Old Growth Spruce Taiga biome in Minecraft

The Old Growth Spruce Taiga is a dense taiga of giant spruces whose long, thick cones of needles rise high above the ground. Podzol, coarse dirt, mossy boulders and plenty of mushrooms cover its floor, and it is one of the best places to gather spruce wood in quantity.

Structures in the Old Growth Spruce Taiga

A forest of giant spruces

About a third of the trees are giant spruces with 2 × 2 trunks and long, thick cones of leaves. Ordinary spruces and pines grow between them, and fallen spruce trunks cross the ground. Each giant tree turns the soil under it into Podzol, and the rest of the floor mixes podzol, Coarse Dirt and grass. It feels darker and more closed in than the Old Growth Pine Taiga, where the giants keep their leaves only at the top.

Animals and dangers

A Wolf that spawns here wears a chestnut coat, a variant found only in this biome, and foxes and rabbits roam between the trunks. Pigs, cows and chickens spawn in their cold variants. The tall, thick trees block your view, so a Creeper can get close before you notice it: listen for its hiss and light up the paths you use often. Trail Ruins can be buried here, so keep a Brush in your inventory when you explore.

Old Growth Spruce Taiga — FAQ

Why is the ground brown in an Old Growth Spruce Taiga?

It is covered with podzol and coarse dirt instead of grass, and every giant spruce turns the soil under it into podzol. Mine podzol with Silk Touch to keep it, otherwise it drops dirt.

How do you grow a giant spruce?

Plant four Spruce Saplings in a 2 × 2 square and use bone meal on one of them. If there is enough room above, they grow into a single giant tree with a 2 × 2 trunk.

Which mobs spawn in the Old Growth Spruce Taiga?

Sheep, Pig, Chicken, Cow, Wolf, Fox, Rabbit, Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime, Zombie, Enderman, Zombie Villager, Witch, Bat and Glow Squid.

Abandoned Camp, Mineshaft, Ruined Portal, Stronghold, Trail Ruins and Trial Chambers.
