Wolf mob in Minecraft

The Wolf is the combat pet of the game: tame it with bones and it follows you, fights what you fight and can wear armor made from armadillo scutes. Wild wolves are neutral, but hitting one turns the whole pack against you.

Where to find wolves

Wolves roam in packs through forests, taigas, groves, savannas, jungles and badlands. Each of these biomes has its own coat, so collecting every variant is a good excuse to travel. Be careful with your sword near them: if you hit a wild wolf, even by accident, the whole pack turns hostile and comes for you.

How to tame a wolf

  • Hold bones and feed them to a wild wolf one at a time. Each bone only has a chance to work: when it does, hearts appear and the wolf gets a red collar.
  • Bring plenty of bones, since it often takes several. Skeletons are the usual source.
  • Use the wolf to make it sit or stand. A sitting wolf stays where it is and does not teleport to you.
  • Use a dye on it to change the collar color, handy when you own several dogs.

What a tamed wolf does in a fight

A tamed wolf attacks any mob you hit and any mob that hits you, then comes back to your side. It is much tougher than a wild one. It never attacks Creepers, which is lucky, since the blast would hurt it badly. Skeletons are afraid of wolves and back away from them, which makes a dog very useful in caves. Watch its tail: the lower it hangs, the less health the wolf has left.

Healing and breeding

Feed a hurt wolf meat or fish to heal it. Rotten flesh works and does no harm to wolves, so it is the cheapest dog food you have. Once two tamed wolves are at full health, feeding them meat makes them breed, and the puppy is born tamed. Wild wolves cannot be bred.

Wolf armor

Wolf armor is crafted from armadillo scutes. Use it on your tamed wolf to put it on. The armor takes the damage in place of the wolf until it breaks, and cracks appear as it wears down. Repair it by using more scutes on the wolf, dye it like leather armor, and remove it with shears. To collect scutes, brush an armadillo in a savanna or the badlands.

Wolf — FAQ

How many bones do you need to tame a wolf?

It varies, because each bone only has a chance to tame it. Bring a good handful so you are not left short.

Why is my wolf's tail hanging low?

The tail shows the wolf's health. Feed it meat or fish until the tail rises again.

Do tamed wolves attack Creepers?

No. A tamed wolf ignores Creepers even if you hit one, which keeps it out of the explosion.

Where does the Wolf spawn?

In 9 Overworld biomes, for example Old Growth Pine Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga and Savanna Plateau.

What does a Wolf drop?

Nothing from its loot table, but it drops anything a player put on it.
