Sparse Jungle biome in Minecraft
The Sparse Jungle is the open side of the jungle: scattered jungle trees, low bushes and grass on rolling ground, without the giant trees or the wall of leaves. It is much easier to cross and to build in, and it has its own residents: wolves with a rusty coat take the place of parrots and pandas.

Structures in the Sparse Jungle
What a Sparse Jungle looks like
The trees are those of the Jungle, minus the giants. Regular jungle trees with vines and cocoa pods, low bushes made of a Jungle Log and Oak Leaves, a few large oaks and the odd fallen trunk stand far apart. Between them the ground stays open, covered with short grass and ferns. Melons still grow here, but they are much rarer than in the dense jungle.
With nothing blocking the view, this is the friendliest part of a jungle region. You see mobs coming from afar, and you can clear a building site without felling a forest of giant trees.
Rusty wolves and other animals
The Sparse Jungle is the only jungle biome where wolves spawn naturally, and wolves born in a jungle biome get the rusty coat, a reddish-brown fur you will not see elsewhere. Tame one with bones like any other wolf. Pigs, cows and chickens here use their warm-climate look. Parrots, ocelots and pandas, on the other hand, never spawn in this biome.
What to do here
- Look for an Abandoned Camp. The Sparse Jungle is one of the biomes that can hold an Abandoned Camp.
- Farm cocoa. Collect Cocoa Beans from the trees and plant them on the side of jungle logs: they only grow there.
- Get jungle wood easily. The trees are short and spread out, so chopping them is quick and you rarely need to climb.
- Head deeper for temples. The Jungle Pyramid does not generate here: you need to move into the dense Jungle or the Bamboo Jungle.
