Fern block in Minecraft

Present since 1.0 or earlier Stack size: 64

Fern grows in taigas and jungles, and bone meal turns it into a large fern. Grass and ferns are filler plants that make landscapes look lush. Grass and ferns work the same; the Short Grass page explains them.

It cannot be crafted; it can be found in chests. It can be composted: each one has a 65% chance to add a layer to a Composter.

Fern · FAQ

How do you get Fern in Minecraft?

Broken with Shears, the block drops itself; otherwise it drops Wheat Seeds. It can be found as loot in Village. Sold by Wandering Trader.

What is Fern used for in Minecraft?

It is a decorative filler plant that sometimes gives seeds.

Can you compost Fern?

Yes. Each Fern put in a Composter has a 65% chance to add a layer (the first layer in an empty Composter always works). After 7 layers the Composter gives Bone Meal.

Can a piston move Fern?

No: when a piston pushes it, it breaks and drops as an item.

Does Fern burn?

Yes: fire can spread to it and destroy it, and lava nearby can set it alight.
