Old Growth Birch Forest biome in Minecraft

The Old Growth Birch Forest is a variant of the Birch Forest where about half the birches grow far taller than usual. The result is a tall, airy forest of white trunks, with wildflowers below and, sometimes, Trail Ruins buried under the ground, waiting for a player with a brush.

Structures in the Old Growth Birch Forest

Giant birches

The trees are the same species as in a Birch Forest, but here one birch in two shoots up into a much longer trunk before its crown. Walking between them feels like walking through a hall of white columns. Fallen trunks lie here and there, some of them from these tall birches. On the ground grow Wildflowers, tall flowers such as the Rose Bush, a few Bush clumps and, near water, the Firefly Bush.

Digging up Trail Ruins

This is the only birch forest where Trail Ruins generate. They are mostly buried, so look for a few blocks of old walls poking out of the grass. Dig around them carefully: they hide Suspicious Gravel that you clean with a Brush to uncover pottery sherds, armor trims and other finds. Mining suspicious gravel with a shovel destroys what it holds, so brush every block you are not sure about.

Wood and building

A single tall birch gives far more Birch Logs than a normal one, which makes this biome a good stop when you need a lot of light wood. Keep in mind that a Birch Sapling grows into a regular birch, wherever you collected it: the giant ones only appear when the world generates. Like other birch forests, the biome spawns no wolves or rabbits, only farm animals. The tall trunks make it a striking setting for a treehouse or a lookout tower, as long as you light the ground below, where hostile mobs gather at night.
