Bat mob in Minecraft

The Bat is a small, harmless flying mob that lives in dark caves. It does not attack, drops nothing and has no use, but it is a good sign that open caves are nearby. It is mostly part of the atmosphere underground.

Where Bats live

Bats spawn in the dark, underground, at any height as long as blocks cover them from the sky. They appear under almost every Overworld biome, including the Mushroom Fields, where hostile mobs never spawn, and in cave biomes such as the Lush Caves, the Dripstone Caves and the Sulfur Caves. One exception: there are none in the Deep Dark.

A Bat at rest hangs upside down from the ceiling. When you come close, it wakes up and flies off in a jerky, unpredictable path.

No more Halloween bonus

Older versions spawned more Bats around Halloween. In Java Edition 26.3 their spawn rules are the same all year: a cave full of Bats simply has a lot of dark space.

What Bats are good for

  • Finding caves. If you hear Bats squeaking while you dig a tunnel, there is an open cave close by.
  • Nothing else. A Bat drops no item, cannot be bred or tamed, and does not fight back.

Bats are counted separately from monsters when the game spawns mobs, so they do not take the place of zombies or skeletons in a dark spawning room. They can still fly through it, which is harmless.

Hitting a Bat

Its erratic flight makes a Bat hard to hit with a bow, and it is not worth the arrows. If one keeps flapping around your base, the simplest fix is light: torches keep caves bright enough that Bats stop spawning there. Bats never take fall damage, so do not count on a drop to get rid of them.
