Where and when to find foxes

Foxes spawn in taigas, snowy taigas and groves. In snowy places they have the white arctic coat. During the day they mostly sleep, which is the easiest time to get close. At night they hunt chickens, rabbits, fish and baby turtles, pouncing on prey with a high leap. They also raid sweet berry bushes, whose thorns do not hurt them.

How to get a fox that trusts you

Wild foxes run from any player who is not sneaking. Feeding one does not tame it, but breeding two does the job:

Sneak up to two adult foxes with sweet berries or glow berries and feed each of them.
The kit born from them trusts you. It no longer flees from you.
If the two adults are far apart, bring them together first with a lead. Leads work on wild foxes.

A trusting fox is still not a pet. It does not sit on command and does not teleport to you, so it wanders off if you leave it alone. Keep it in a fenced area or on a lead when you travel.

A fox at your side

A fox that trusts you attacks mobs that hurt you. It is small and will not win a fight against a strong mob on its own, but it bites quickly and helps against weaker enemies. Keep it away from your chicken coop: trust does not stop it from hunting.

What foxes do with items

A fox picks up items from the ground and carries them in its mouth, and some spawn already holding something, such as an emerald or a feather. If it holds food, it eats it after about 30 seconds, when it is on the ground and not chasing anything. The most surprising case is a totem of undying: a fox carrying one is saved by it, just like a player. Whatever it holds drops when it dies.
