Old Growth Pine Taiga biome in Minecraft
The Old Growth Pine Taiga is a taiga variant full of giant spruces with long bare trunks and a small crown at the very top. Its floor of podzol and coarse dirt, its mossy boulders and its many mushrooms make it look older and wilder than a regular Taiga.

Structures in the Old Growth Pine Taiga
Giant pines and bare trunks
Many trees here are giants with a 2 × 2 trunk. In this biome most of them are giant pines: long, bare trunks with only a short cone of leaves at the top, which gives the forest an open, high-ceilinged look. Ordinary spruces and pines fill the gaps, and fallen spruces lie on the ground. Under each giant tree the soil turns to Podzol, and the rest of the floor mixes podzol, Coarse Dirt and grass.
What to collect
- Spruce wood in bulk. One giant trunk holds dozens of Spruce Logs. Plant four Spruce Saplings in a 2 × 2 square to grow a giant tree yourself.
- Mushrooms. Brown and red mushrooms are far more common than in most biomes. Mushrooms can be planted on podzol whatever the light level, which makes this soil ideal for a mushroom farm.
- Undergrowth. A Sweet Berry Bush, Large Ferns and the occasional Dead Bush grow on the forest floor.
- Mossy boulders. Small rocks of Mossy Cobblestone sit on the ground, an easy source of this block without any crafting.
Zombie villagers and wolves
This biome stands out for its night mobs: a Zombie Villager spawns here much more often than in other forests. Cure one with a Splash Potion of Weakness and a Golden Apple to get a villager with discounted trades. A Wolf that spawns here has a black coat, a variant you won't find in any other biome, and foxes and rabbits live under the trees too. The biome has its own music, shared with the Old Growth Spruce Taiga.
