Baby mobs in Minecraft

Most animals in Minecraft have a baby form: smaller, often with its own model, and unable to breed until it grows up. Here is how to get each one and how to control its growth.

How babies grow up

  • A baby animal becomes an adult after 20 minutes of game time spent in loaded chunks.
  • Feeding a baby the food of its species takes 10% off the time it has left.
  • A Golden Dandelion used on a baby stops it from aging; use it again and it starts growing. It does not work on undead babies or baby Villagers.
  • Using a mob’s spawn egg on an adult of the same kind spawns a baby next to it.
  • Baby zombies never grow up.

Mobs you breed with food

Give the item to two adults standing close to each other: they enter love mode and a baby appears. Adults then wait 5 minutes before breeding again.
