How the skeleton trap works

Skeleton horses never spawn in a biome. They come from a trap: during a thunderstorm, a lightning strike can leave a lone skeleton horse standing in the open. It looks harmless, but when you walk up to it, lightning strikes again and the trap turns into several skeleton horsemen, skeletons riding skeleton horses, with helmets and bows.

Treat it as a small fight. Bring a shield against the arrows and armor of your own, and fight near cover. The horsemen are undead, so a sword or axe with Smite ends the fight quickly. The higher the local difficulty, the more often storms produce these traps.

Claiming the horses

Once the riders are dead, their mounts stay behind, and they are already tamed. You do not need to climb on repeatedly as with a wild horse: put a saddle on one and ride away. A single trap can give you a small herd.

A skeleton horse cannot wear horse armor or carry a chest, and it cannot be bred. It has no food: wheat and golden carrots do nothing for it.

The underwater mount

This is what makes a skeleton horse worth keeping. It does not drown, and unlike a living horse it does not throw you off when it dives. You can ride it along the bottom of a lake or an ocean. You still need air, so drink a Potion of Water Breathing before a long crossing.

Healing an undead horse

Like other undead mobs, a skeleton horse reacts the wrong way to potions. Instant Health hurts it, while a splash Potion of Harming heals it. Regeneration and Poison have no effect at all. It does not burn in daylight, so it is safe to leave outside, and the Wither ignores it. When it dies, it drops bones.

How do you tame a skeleton horse?

You do not need to. Skeleton horses from a skeleton trap are already tamed once their riders are dead, so you can saddle them straight away.

Can you breed skeleton horses?

No. They have no breeding food and cannot be bred. The only way to get more is another skeleton trap.

How do you heal a skeleton horse?

Throw a splash Potion of Harming at it. Food and Regeneration do not work, and Instant Health hurts it.

Where does the Skeleton Horse spawn?

During thunderstorms. Lightning can leave a skeleton trap: a lone Skeleton Horse that, when a player comes close, becomes four horses ridden by skeletons. It never spawns any other way.

What does a Skeleton Horse drop?

Bone. It also drops anything a player put on it.
