Drowned mob in Minecraft

The Drowned is the underwater zombie of rivers, oceans and flooded caves. It swims, attacks you in the water at any time and comes ashore at night, and some carry a trident they can throw. It is also the main source of tridents.

Where Drowned come from

Drowned spawn in water: oceans, rivers, where they are especially common, and the flooded parts of Dripstone Caves. Groups also guard Ocean Ruins. And any Zombie that stays underwater long enough turns into one.

When a Drowned attacks

During the day, a Drowned only goes after you if you are in the water. At night it also chases you onto land. Sunlight burns it like a Zombie, unless it wears a helmet or stays submerged. Luring Drowned out of the water on a sunny day lets the sun do the work.

Underwater you are slow and they are not, so do not fight a group from below. Stay on a boat or on the shore and let them come to you.

Tridents, shells and fishing rods

Some Drowned spawn holding a trident. They throw it from a distance, and it hits hard: take these ones seriously. A trident cannot be crafted. Apart from a rare reward in the vaults of Trial Chambers, killing these Drowned is the way to get one. It does not always drop, so expect to try several times.

Others hold a Nautilus Shell or a fishing rod, which they can drop too. Eight shells around a Heart of the Sea make a Conduit. Drowned killed by a player can also drop a Copper Ingot.

How to fight Drowned

  • Use Smite. A Drowned is undead. Impaling, on the other hand, gives no bonus against it, because it is not an aquatic mob.
  • Bring an axolotl. Axolotls always attack Drowned, and a few released from a bucket make good allies underwater.
  • Kill trident holders first. They are the only Drowned that hurt you from range.

Drowned — FAQ

How do you get a trident in Minecraft?

Kill Drowned that hold one, and expect several tries because it does not drop every time. A trident cannot be crafted, and the only other source is a rare reward from Trial Chambers vaults.

Do Drowned come out of the water?

Yes, at night. During the day they only attack you when you are in the water, and sunlight burns them on land.

Does Impaling work on Drowned?

No. Impaling only adds damage against aquatic mobs, and the Drowned is not one. Use Smite instead.

Where does the Drowned spawn?

In 12 Overworld biomes, for example River, Dripstone Caves and Cold Ocean.

What does a Drowned drop?

Rotten Flesh and Copper Ingot. Only when killed by a player: Copper Ingot. It also drops the weapon or armor it spawned with (8.5% chance per piece), a Nautilus Shell if it holds one and any items it picked up off the ground.
