Turtle mob in Minecraft

The Turtle is a slow, peaceful animal of sandy beaches that always returns to the beach where it hatched to lay its eggs. Breeding turtles is worth the effort: each baby that grows up drops a Turtle Scute, the material of the Turtle Shell helmet and of the Potion of the Turtle Master.

Where Turtles live

Turtles spawn on beaches, usually in small groups, and spend their time between the sand and the sea. They crawl slowly on land but swim well. Each Turtle remembers its home beach, the place where it was born, and that memory drives the whole breeding cycle.

How to breed Turtles

  • Feed two adults Seagrass. Collect it with shears. Turtles also follow you while you hold it.
  • Let the pregnant Turtle go home. It swims back to its home beach, however far away, and digs into the sand to lay a clutch of up to four Turtle Eggs.
  • Wait for the eggs to hatch. They crack slowly and only hatch on sand. They progress faster at night.

Since a Turtle always lays on its own beach, breed them where they were born, or hatch your first eggs right next to your base so the next generation calls it home.

Protect the eggs and the babies

Turtle Eggs are fragile. Walking or jumping on them can break them, and zombies and Drowned go out of their way to trample them. Fence the nest and light it up. To move eggs, mine them with Silk Touch, or they break into nothing. Baby Turtles are an easy target for many mobs, so keep them inside the enclosure until they grow up.

Scutes, shells and potions

When a baby Turtle grows into an adult, it drops a Turtle Scute. Five scutes craft a Turtle Shell, a helmet that gives you a few extra seconds of Water Breathing each time you dive. You can repair it with more scutes. Brewed into an Awkward Potion, the shell gives the Potion of the Turtle Master, which combines strong Resistance with heavy Slowness: perfect for holding a position, not for running.
